If you’re considering intrauterine insemination (IUI) as part of your fertility journey, it’s completely natural to have questions–especially about how much sperm is needed for the procedure. Knowing these details can help you feel more confident, informed, and reassured as you undergo this fertility treatment.

How much sperm is needed for IUI?

When it comes to IUI success, the total volume of semen collected isn’t the most important factor. Instead, what matters most is the quality and quantity of healthy, active sperm remaining after the sample has been specially prepared for the procedure.

Before the procedure, your fertility clinic will perform a process called “sperm washing.” This technique removes seminal fluids, unhealthy or slow-moving sperm, and other elements that could interfere with fertilisation. What remains is a concentrated sample of the healthiest sperm–typically about 0.3 to 0.5 ml–used during your IUI.

What is the ideal sperm count after washing?

Total motile sperm (after washing)Success chances
Over 10 millionHigh success rate
5-10 millionGood success rate
1-5 millionLower success rate, but still possible
Less than 1 millionSuccess rates are very low, so IVF or ICSI may be recommended.

What is the minimum sperm count for IUI?

When evaluating sperm count for IUI, your fertility specialist will look at two important measurements–before and after the sperm preparation process.

  • After sperm washing (post-wash count):

    • The processed sample used for IUI needs to contain at least 1 million total motile sperm as the minimum threshold for proceeding with treatment. However, the ideal range is 5–10 million motile sperm, which offers much better success rates.

  • Before sperm washing (pre-wash count):

    • To achieve good results after processing, the original semen sample should ideally contain more than 15 million sperm per millilitre. This higher starting count helps ensure adequate numbers of healthy sperm remain after the washing procedure.

What is the minimum sperm motility for IUI?

  • Sperm motility describes how well sperm move, especially in a forward (progressive) direction, which is important for reaching the egg.

  • For IUI, the minimum progressive motility should be 30% or higher.

  • According to World Health Organisation (WHO) standards:

    • Progressive motility should be 32% or higher.

    • Total motility (including all moving sperm) should be 40% or higher.

  • If the sperm do not move well, they may struggle to reach the egg and fertilise it, even if the sperm count is adequate.

What is the importance of sperm count in IUI?

During IUI, sperm are placed directly into your womb, bypassing the cervix. But the sperm still needs to travel to the fallopian tubes to fertilise the egg.

Having a higher number of healthy, moving sperm can improve the chances that one will reach the egg successfully. One important measure your clinic looks at is the total motile sperm count (TMSC), which helps predict how likely the IUI is to work.

Does more sperm mean higher pregnancy rates?

Well, yes, but only up to a point. Having a good number of healthy, moving sperm helps your chances, especially if there are around 10 to 15 million swimming around after they’ve been cleaned up. But after that, having even more sperm doesn’t really make a big difference. That’s because other things like the health of the eggs, timing, and your uterus matter just as much.

A very high sperm count (>20 million post-wash) doesn’t always lead to better chances of pregnancy.

What affects how much sperm is needed for IUI?

A few things come into play when figuring out how much sperm is enough for IUI:

  • Sperm health:

    • It’s not just about the number–how well the sperm swim, how they’re shaped, and whether their DNA is in good shape also matter.

  • Female factors:

    • Your age, whether you’re ovulating regularly, and how many eggs are maturing in that cycle all play a role.

  • Type of cycle:

    • Whether you have a natural cycle or helped by medicines like Clomid or Letrozole can change how much sperm is needed.

  • Timing of the IUI:

    • IUI works best when done close to ovulation–usually within 6 to 12 hours before or after.

  • Where the sperm comes from:

    • Fresh sperm may work a bit differently than frozen donor sperm.

  • The reason for trying IUI:

    • If the the reason for you and partner to try IUI is due to mild male issues, unexplained fertility problems, or cervical issues, the sperm needed  for this fertility treatment might vary.

All these factors help the doctor decide what’s right for you and your partner.

What happens if sperm count is low?

If the total number of moving sperm (TMSC) is less than 1 million, the chances of IUI working go down a lot.

But don’t worry! Here are some things you can try:

  • Make healthy changes, like eating better and avoiding smoking or alcohol

  • Take medicines that could help with sperm health

  • If that doesn’t help, IVF with ICSI (where a single sperm is injected into the egg) might be a better option.

  • Consider using donor sperm if other options don’t work

Some clinics may not offer IUI at all if the sperm count is too low, because the chances of success are very slim.

FAQ

What is a normal sperm count for IUI?

After the sperm is washed in the lab, doctors usually look for at least 5-10 million moving (motile) sperm. Before washing, a semen analysis based on WHO guidelines shows normal sperm should have:

  • Volume: At least 1.5 ml
  • Sperm concentration: 15 million sperm per ml or more
  • Motility: At least 40% moving, with 32% swimming forward

Is 2 ml sperm enough for IUI?

Yes! For IUI, it’s not really about how much semen there is, but about sperm quality and sperm concentration. Even a small amount can be processed in the lab to select the healthiest, most motile sperm for artificial insemination.

How much sperm should be purchased for IUI?

Usually, one vial (0.5 ml) per IUI cycle is enough. Donor sperm banks usually offer:

  • Washed sperm (ready for IUI) with at least 5–10 million motile sperm
  • Unwashed sperm, used for IVF or ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection)

Can a low sperm count work for IUI?

Yes, it can, if the number of moving sperm after washing (called post-wash TMSC) is at least 1 million. If the percentage of sperm swimming forward is below 32%, the chances of success are quite low unless all other factors, such as perfect timing and good egg quality, are optimal.

How successful is IUI on the first try?

The average chance of pregnancy per IUI try is about 10-20%, though success varies with female age:

  • Women under 35 have up to a 20% chance each cycle.
  • Women over 40 have less than a 10% chance per cycle.
  • If you do IUI several times (like 3–6 cycles), success rates can add up to about 40-50%.

How to increase sperm count for IUI?

  • Some of the natural ways to increase your sperm count are as follows:
    • Avoid hot baths, tight underwear, alcohol, smoking, and stress.
    • Eat healthy foods, like leafy greens, whole grains, and foods rich in omega-3s.
    • Get enough sleep, stay active (not too much), and keep a healthy weight.
    • Take antioxidants (like CoQ10, vitamins C and E, zinc, and selenium) if your fertility doctor suggests.
  • Here are some medical ways that your doctor may use to increase your sperm count:
    • Treat any infections or hormone problems your doctor might find.
    • Sometimes, doctors prescribe fertility drugs or hormone injections, such as Clomiphene, hCG, or FSH, when necessary.

Can 2 ml of sperm be enough to get pregnant?

Yes! As long as the sperm are healthy and moving well, a volume of 2 ml is usually sufficient. What really matters is both the number and quality of the sperm, rather than just the total amount.

How many eggs are ideal for IUI?

Having 1 to 3 mature eggs (follicles) is ideal:

  • 1 egg:
    • Less chance of twins, but still a good pregnancy rate.
  • 2-3 eggs:
    • Higher chance of success, but also more risk of twins or triplets.
  • More than 3 eggs:
    • Usually doctors discouraged it because of the high chance of having multiples.

Doctors may use ovulation induction with mild medication to increase egg count safely during your fertility treatment cycle.

What is the best sperm sample for IUI?

  • The sample should be collected after 2-5 days without ejaculation.
  • The sperm should move well and look healthy.
  • At least 4% of the sperm should have normal sperm morphology (shape)
  • The sample should be clean and free of white blood cells, debris, or harmful antibodies.

Your fertility doctor will assess these factors as part of evaluating any fertility issues before starting treatment.
