Dr Aidan Yeo is an Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon at Thomson Specialist Dentistry.After earning his degree from the National University of Singapore, Dr Yeo served for two years as a dental officer at the National Dental Centre. He then completed a rigorous three-year residency program in Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, earning a Masters of Dental Surgery (Oral Maxillofacial Surgery) and subsequently gaining fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons.Following his advanced specialist training, Dr Yeo was admitted as a Fellow in the Academy of Medicine, Singapore, and registered as a Specialist in Oral Maxillofacial Surgery. His expertise encompasses a broad spectrum of <a href="https://www.thomsonmedical.com/blog/dental/oral-and-maxillofacial-surgery" target="_blank">oral and maxillofacial procedures</a>, with particular interests in <a href="https://www.thomsonmedical.com/dental/services/dental-implants" target="_blank">dental implantology</a> and <a href="https://www.thomsonmedical.com/blog/dental/jaw-surgery" target="_blank">orthognathic (jaw) surgery</a>. Dr Aidan Yeo

Dr Ashley Thean is a dentist at <a href="https://www.thomsonmedical.com/centres/dental-centre" target="_blank">Thomson Dental Centre</a>, with a special interest in <a href="https://www.thomsonmedical.com/dental/children-dental" target="_blank">children's dentistry</a>.Dr Thean, an alumna of the University of Melbourne, is deeply committed to the comfort and care of her patients. As she has a special interest in children's dentistry, she consistently employs a kind and gentle approach with her young patients, ensuring their experiences are positive and comforting. During her undergraduate years, she was awarded the William J. Tuckfield Prize for her outstanding performance in restorative dentistry. She further distinguished herself by making the Dean's List for High Achievement. Topping that accolade, one of Dr Thean's research papers, submitted as an undergraduate, was selected to be published in the Australian Dental Journal.Dr Thean began her career in private practice in rural Australia, where she provided dental care to a diverse range of patients across various socio-economic backgrounds. Committed to her professional development, she regularly participates in continuing education, including programmes like the 35th Australian Dental Congress in Melbourne. Dr Ashley Thean

Dr Charlotte Goh is a dentist at <a href="https://www.thomsonmedical.com/centres/dental-centre" target="_blank">Thomson Dental Centre</a>.Dr Charlotte graduated from the University of Adelaide with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery. During her time in Australia, she gained valuable experience providing diverse dental services in both metropolitan and rural clinics across Australia. Additionally, she dedicated her time to the local Community Outreach Programme for the underprivileged community. She strives to provide quality care to help patients achieve a healthy and beautiful smile. Her gentle approach ensures a comfortable and reassuring patient experience.Dr Charlotte believes in the importance of good communication and trust in helping her patients attain their oral health goals. Dr Charlotte Goh

Dr Chua Chee Haow is a dentist at <a href="https://www.thomsonmedical.com/centres/dental-centre" target="_blank">Thomson Dental Centre</a>, bringing over two decades of expertise to his practice.Dr Chua earned his dental degree from the National University of Singapore in 1990. He has served as the Clinical Director and managed multiple clinics for over 20 years. Dedicated to continuing professional development, Dr Chua was awarded a Fellowship from the prestigious Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (FRACDS) for demonstrating his commitment to the highest standard of care for his patients. Subsequently, he was also awarded a Fellowship with The International Congress of Oral Implantology for his in-depth knowledge of implantology and exceptional interest in the advancement of implant dentistry.Dr Chua also keeps up to date with the latest in technology in dentistry and was one of the first in Singapore to introduce computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing in dental ceramic restorations. Dr Chua is particularly skilled at treating nervous patients and is well-known by his patients for his caring and gentle personality.Dr Chua has a keen interest in treating bite and jaw problems, often helping patients alleviate symptoms of migraines and tension headaches with successful outcomes. He is also experienced with interceptive orthodontics for children which involves the correction of teeth position as soon as they develop. This allows the development of well-aligned and straight teeth as the child grows into adulthood.Dr Chua believes in giving back to the community. He volunteers at his alma mater, Gan Eng Seng School, and participates in medical-dental missions abroad, providing free dental services in countries like Thailand and Cambodia.In his downtime, he travels to California, USA to spend time with his three adorable nieces, Megan, Naomi, and Kenzi.

Dr Chua Chee Haow

She has a particular interest in implants and cosmetic dentistry and is committed to providing excellent ongoing care for her young patients.Dr Neo graduated from the University of Western Australia in 2000 and returned to Singapore to begin her private practice. Her gentle and caring demeanour has a calming effect on even the most nervous of patients.Dr Neo is a CEREC-certified practitioner in CAD/CAM technology for ceramic dental restorations. In 2010, she furthered her expertise by earning a Postgraduate Certificate in the Principles of Implant Dentistry from the University of Warwick. She is an active member of the Association of Women Doctors (Singapore) and the Aesthetic Dentistry Society Singapore.Beyond her professional commitments, Dr Neo is dedicated to community service, having volunteered for medical-dental missions in countries like Myanmar and China, providing essential care in underserved areas.

Dr Low Hwee Hiang is an orthodontist at Thomson Specialist Dentistry.Dr Low completed both her basic dental and specialist dental training in orthodontics at the National University of Singapore, earning a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) in 2004. She was conferred a Master of Dental Surgery (Orthodontics) in 2009, along with a Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh).Dr Low is adept in enhancing the smiles of her patients, ensuring her patients' comfort throughout their orthodontic journey. She offers a wide range of treatments, including interceptive treatment and growth modification for children, as well as combined orthodontic-orthognathic surgery management for adults. She is also accredited to use orthodontic systems such as Invisalign®, Simpliclear™, K Line, and eCligner®, and has incorporated Myobrace™ therapy and PROPEL Orthodontics into her practice to enhance treatment outcomes.Prior to joining private practice, Dr Low provided orthodontic service at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital. Dr Low Yi Han is a periodontist at Thomson Specialist Dentistry.Dr Low obtained his Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2005. Following three years of general practice that included hospital and community dentistry, he pursued further specialisation in Periodontology, obtaining a Master of Dental Surgery degree in 2011. That same year, he was awarded a Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, United Kingdom. In 2013, he achieved Specialist Registration with the Singapore Dental Council as a periodontist.Dr Low specialises in a comprehensive range of non-surgical and surgical periodontal therapies, as well as dental implant procedures, with a particular interest in regenerative periodontics. His expertise enables him to restore health and functionality to his patients' periodontal conditions using various treatments.Outside his clinical practice, he was involved in undergraduate teaching at NUS and has served as an adjunct lecturer at Nanyang Polytechnic for the oral health therapist program, sharing his knowledge and skills with the next generation of dental professionals.

Dr Low Yi Han

Dr Michelle Chua is a dentist at Thomson Dental Centre. While she practices general dentistry, she also has a keen interest in Orthodontics.Dr Chua graduated from the University of Glasgow with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree in 2018, where she also received the Dental Elective Study Award and presented at the first "Visualisation in Science Conference" hosted by the university. She is a firm believer in the importance of staying current with emerging technologies and techniques to enhance patient care.Upon graduation, Dr Chua worked at a National Health Services practice in Scotland, where she underwent rigorous Vocational Training. She treated a diverse range of patients from various socioeconomic backgrounds and age groups.Dr Chua is committed to collaborative care, actively involving her patients in the creation of personalised treatment plans that reflect their specific needs and wants. Known for her calm and gentle personality, she consistently aims to provide a positive dental experience for her patients.Outside of her professional life, Dr Chua is an avid jogger, finding long-distance running to be the perfect way to clear her mind. Above all, she treasures spending quality time with her family and friends, particularly over a good meal.

Dr Michelle Chua

Dr Michele Chia is an endodontist at Thomson Specialist Dentistry.Dr Chia graduated with honours from the National University of Ireland. Subsequently, she obtained her Master of Clinical Dentistry with Distinction in Endodontology from King's College London. That same year, she was admitted as a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. She is also an active member of the Society of Endodontics Singapore.Dr Chia's special interest is in Endodontics — a branch of dentistry concerned with diseases and injuries of the dental pulp and surrounding structures. She is well-versed in using microscopic endodontic and microsurgical techniques to save teeth with infected root canals, and manage persistent infections and cracked teeth.Additionally, Dr Chia has a keen interest in the management of traumatic dental injuries. During her Endodontics Postgraduate Residency Training Program, she served on the dental trauma service team at King's College Hospital — one of London's major trauma centres — where she provided emergency dental care and long-term follow-up and rehabilitation for trauma patients.

Dr Michele Chia Xin Yi

Dr Shirley Yap is a prosthodontist at Thomson Specialist Dentistry. She has been practising dentistry since 1985.Dr Yap pursued her bachelor's degree at the National University of Singapore (NUS) as a Public Service Commission (PSC) scholar and worked at Singapore General Hospital and National University Hospital (NUH). In 1988, NUH sponsored her to pursue a postgraduate degree at the Eastman Dental Hospital in London, UK.Upon her return, Dr Yap served as a Registrar at NUH and contributed to NUS as a clinical supervisor at the Department of Restorative Dentistry from 1989 to 1993. After leaving for private practice in 1993, she has volunteered for several medical-dental missions to Cambodia, Vietnam, the Philippines, China, and Mongolia to provide free dental services to underprivileged communities in orphanages and with non-governmental organisations.Dr Yap's commitment to the community extends beyond her volunteer work; she also served on the executive committee of the Association of Women Doctors (Singapore) from 2004 to 2009, contributing to the advancement of women in the medical field.

Dr Shirley Yap

Dr Teo Juin Wei is a prosthodontist. His areas of expertise include dentures, crowns, bridges, and dental implants of all complexities. He has a special interest in full mouth rehabilitation and improving functional issues related to chewing. In addition, Dr Teo provides general dental services such as scaling, fillings, and extractions.Dr Teo graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree in 2005. He subsequently went on to pursue his specialist training in prosthodontics and obtained a Master of Dental Surgery degree and Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) in 2012. He is also registered as a specialist in prosthodontics with the Singapore Dental Council.Before joining Thomson Dental Centre, Dr Teo worked at Khoo Teck Phuat Hospital and Tan Tock Seng Hospital. His academic contributions include publishing papers in international journals and serving as a reviewer for the Singapore Dental Journal.Beyond his professional endeavours, Dr Teo is dedicated to enhancing his patients' oral health and overall quality of life. He finds joy in helping patients improve their oral function, appearance, and quality of life. He believes that having good oral health and function is an integral part of our well-being, and is committed to helping patients address their concerns.Dr Teo is married and a proud father to a daughter. In his free time, he enjoys mountain biking, practicing yoga, and spending time with his family.

Dr Teo Juin Wei

Dr Toh Siew Luan is a Paediatric dentist at Thomson Specialist Dentistry.Dr Toh graduated from National University of Singapore in 1999. During her undergraduate training, she was on the Dean's list and awarded the Mummery Book Prize for best student in oral pathology in 1998. She received a scholarship from the National Dental Centre to pursue specialty training in Paediatric dentistry in Melbourne, Australia, earning a Graduate Diploma in Clinical Dentistry in 2004 and a Doctorate in Clinical Dentistry (Paediatric Dentistry) in 2006.After working many years in the Paediatric Dentistry Unit at the National Dental Centre, Dr Toh transited to private practice. She also volunteers her expertise at the AWWA School for disabled and autistic children.Since 2012, Dr Toh has been the Chairperson for the Chapter of Paediatric Dentistry, College of Dental Surgeons, and the Vice President of the Society for Paediatric Dentistry (Singapore). She is also an appointed member of the Dental Specialist Accreditation Committee in Paediatric Dentistry whose function is to assess the qualifications, experience, and training programmes of dentists who wish to qualify for registration as specialists by conducting exit assessments.Dr Toh has many years of experience in the diagnosis and treatment of tooth decay and dental trauma for children, especially those who are fearful and anxious or those who need extensive or complex treatment. She provides comprehensive preventive and therapeutic oral healthcare for her patients as well as treatment under sedation and general anaesthesia. She has a special interest in managing dental conditions of babies, medically compromised children, and children with special needs. She takes great delight in helping her young patients become confident and eager for their next dental visit.Outside of her work, she enjoys teaching preschoolers in a Sunday school. She is also a devoted mother of two children, blending her professional expertise and personal experience to enhance her practice and community contributions.

Dr Yeo Siang Khin is a dentist at Thomson Dental Centre, bringing over 20 years of clinical experience since graduating from the National University of Singapore, where she was awarded the University Bronze Medal in her final year professional examinations in the Faculty of Dentistry.Following her tenure at the University Hospital’s Dental Centre, Dr Yeo transitioned to private practice. Her scope of work in general practice spans aesthetic dentistry, children’s dentistry, periodontics, implant dentistry, and endodontics. Known for her gentle approach, Dr Yeo is particularly popular among her young patients, consistently ensuring their visits are assuring and pleasant.Dr Yeo has a special interest in root canal treatment and stays current in the field of endodontics by regularly participating in workshops and conventions. She is proficient in using the surgical microscope for diagnosing and managing complex root canal cases.Being a certified CEREC practitioner, Dr Yeo is committed to providing her patients with conservative, yet aesthetic and durable restorations using the CAD-CAM system.Additionally, Dr Yeo is a founding member of the Association of Women Doctors Singapore and actively mentors young dental undergraduates through the Faculty of Dentistry Alumni Mentorship Scheme. Breast lumps during pregnancy are very common. The expectant mother will experience many normal physiological changes ― an increase in breast size, more obvious sweat glands around the nipples, a darkening of the areola ― all of which will prepare her body for breastfeeding.Common non-cancerous variations to breasts include hormonal changes (fibrocystic changes), fibroadenomas, cysts, lipomas, accessory (extra) breast tissue. Pregnancy-related breast cancers make up about 3 per cent of all breast cancers.Whenever a pregnant woman feels a lump, she should see a doctor to get their opinion, keeping in mind that most times it will turn out to be nothing serious!<h2>What the doctor will do</h2>When you see the doctor, she will ask details as to how you detected the lump, how long it has been present and if you have detected any changes, so as to get an idea what the lump is likely to be.Next, the doctor will conduct a breast examination to confirm the presence of the lump, and check for any other symptoms such as skin changes or nipple discharge.Most patients will then be recommended to get an ultrasound scan ― this will give additional information as to whether this lump is benign or cancerous. If there is any concern that the lump may be cancerous, your doctor will advise you as to the pros and cons of having a biopsy, which can be done safely even during pregnancy.“If a pregnant women detects a lump, I would advise them to have a thorough consultation and a physical examination, followed by an ultrasound. If necessary, I would then perform a biopsy.”<h2>Breast cancer screening during pregnancy</h2>A screening checks for cancer even when a patient is feeling well and has absolutely no cancer signs or symptoms. For breast cancer screening, most countries, including Singapore, recommend mammogram screening from age 50 onwards. For women who are at higher risk, this may start at 40. Some specialists will recommend a supplementary ultrasound as well.If a pregnant women detects a lump, I would advise them to have a thorough consultation and a physical examination, followed by an ultrasound. If necessary, I would then perform a biopsy.<h2>Screening methods (Mammograms/Ultrasound)</h2>Ultrasound, the same technology used to monitor the baby during pregnancy, is safe and useful in detecting lumps, and to check if it’s solid or cystic. Most specialists do not use ultrasound as a screening method as the majority of such lumps it detects are not cancerous.A diagnostic ultrasound can still be performed safely on pregnant women to assess their breast lump. If a subsequent biopsy confirms a cancer, she may then need a baseline mammogram, after discussing the pros and cons with her doctor. Everything You Need to Know About Breast Biopsy

Just as there are skin issues that arise during pregnancy, skin conditions can also develop after you give birth. Fortunately, they are largely treatable, so there is no need to fret – your postpartum skin and hair will bounce back in no time. We take a look at some of the most common conditions.<h2>Acne</h2>Caused by an inflammation in the facial oil glands, acne may be aggravated by hormonal changes. Most of the time, acne clears within a few weeks or months, but medical treatment should be sought to prevent the risk of scarring. There are many topical agents that can be safely used even when breastfeeding. In more severe cases, oral medications such as antibiotics may be required.<h2>Melasma</h2>Also known as “the mask of pregnancy”, this pigmentation condition is due to increased melanin production and is caused by a combination of genetic and hormonal factors, as well as sun exposure. It tends to affect Asian skin more, appearing as brownish patches over the cheeks, forehead, temples, nasal bridge, upper lips and jawline.It is best controlled by avoiding the sun and with regular use of sunscreen, lightening creams and topical agents, although it can persist in some cases. Other treatments include chemical peeling, intense pulsed light therapy and certain forms of laser therapy. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding – certain ingredients such as tretinoin and hydroquinone that can be found in some skincare products should be avoided by breastfeeding mums.<h2>Dermatitis/eczema</h2>Eczema or dermatitis is a relatively common yet noninfectious condition, so it will not spread to your baby. Often it is an aggravation of an underlying sensitive skin condition that has been present for some time. For new mothers, it can also develop as a result of excessive water contact due to frequent handwashing.Use moisturiser regularly to soothe inflamed and itchy skin. Topical steroid creams are prescribed to calm inflamed skin and are safe to use even when breastfeeding. Use a gentle soap substitute and continue to moisturise even after the skin rash has settled.<h2>Stretchmarks</h2>Affecting at least 90 percent of pregnant women, stretchmarks are a form of scarring that appear red when fresh, but most will fade to white after delivery. During pregnancy, intensive use of moisturisers may help the condition, and there are specially formulated stretchmark creams on the market that you can continue using after delivery. For more severe cases, dermatologists may prescribe tretinoin cream to use postpartum when you are not breastfeeding. Some skin-tightening laser treatments are safe options to remove stretchmarks even if you are breastfeeding, but these usually require multiple sessions.<h2>Telogen effluvium</h2>This condition results in hair fall that usually occurs about three months after delivery. Though increased hair fall can be distressing to new mothers, it is almost always a self-limiting condition, and you will usually recover within six months. If you notice increased hair fall, consult a doctor to exclude other causes of hair loss (such as low iron levels). Topical medications can be used if you are not breastfeeding.
