If your recent Pap smear or HPV test showed abnormal results, your doctor may recommend a colposcopy to examine your cervix more closely. This procedure helps identify changes in the cervical tissue and determine if further tests or treatment are needed.

A colposcopy is an outpatient procedure that uses a special magnifying instrument called a colposcope to view your cervix, vagina, and vulva. If necessary, a small tissue sample (biopsy) may be taken for further evaluation. The procedure usually takes about 10 to 20 minutes, and most patients can return to their usual activities shortly after.
