Dr Sharon Foo is a Maternal Fetal Medicine Consultant with <a href="https://thomsonspecialists.com/" target="_self">Thomson Specialists</a> (Paragon). While her present clinical practice encompasses all aspects of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (O&amp;G), she has a special interest in high-risk obstetrics, operative obstetrics, peri-partum and maternal medicine.Dr Foo graduated from University College London (UK) in 2009 and has more than 12 years of experience in O&amp;G. She obtained her Masters qualification in O&amp;G from Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (MRCOG) in the UK in 2016.Before joining Thomson Medical, Dr Foo was a Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist at KK Women's and Children's Hospital (Singapore).Beyond her clinical commitments, Dr Foo is actively involved in multi-disciplinary obstetrics simulation training. Initially focusing on OBGYN-centric teams, she extends and refines the program to encompass Emergency Medicine and Family Medicine physicians. Dr Claudine Tan is a Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (O&amp;G), at <a href="https://www.thomsonmedical.com/centres/women-clinic" target="_self">Thomson Women’s Clinic</a> (Serangoon).She has dedicated her entire career to the care of pregnancy and women’s health. After receiving her degree in Medicine and Surgery, she completed her internship and residency at various hospitals, including KK Women’s &amp; Children’s Hospital and National University Hospital. Following which, she was accepted into the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in London. She has experience in clinical and surgical obstetrics that include antenatal ultrasound, natural childbirth, and assisted delivery.She is extensively trained in gynaecological surgery such as keyhole surgery. Her O&amp;G expertise and interest expand beyond pregnancy and childbirth. Dr Janice Tung obtained her medical degree from the National University of Singapore, where she received the SS Ratnam Book Prize by the O&amp;G Society of Singapore for topping her cohort in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (O&amp;G). She subsequently completed her post-graduate specialty training in the SingHealth Residency Programme for O&amp;G, and attained her accreditation as a Specialist in O&amp;G by the Specialists Accreditation Board (Ministry of Health, Singapore). Dr Janice is currently a member of the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (UK).Dr Janice was previously an Associate Consultant of the Department of O&amp;G in KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH). She was also appointed clinical faculty of Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, and Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School, and have received the Inspiring Resident-Educator Award (SingHealth) for her contributions to medical student and Residency education.Dr Janice’s extensive experience in managing a wide variety of gynaecological conditions and antenatal care include high-risk pregnancies, with her interests lying in subfertility issues and pregnancy-related complications such as preterm labour, minimally invasive surgery and vulvar disease. She received the prestigious SingHealth Foundation Research Grant Award and the SingHealth Duke-NUS O&amp;G Academic Clinical Programme (ACP) Grant Awards for her work on improving ovarian conservation in laparoscopic cystectomies, as well as labour induction and preterm labour. Dr Janice remains dedicated to providing a value-based, holistic, fulfilling and positive pregnancy experience for women as an Obstetrician, and the best care for her patients as a Doctor.

Dr Janice Tung

Dr. Choo Wan Ling’s clinical expertise includes antenatal care and risk assessment, vaginal assisted and caesarean delivery, and treatment of gynaecological issues such as endometriosis, uterine fibroids, fertility challenges and ovarian cysts.Dr. Choo Wan Ling is an Obstetrician &amp; Gynaecologist with more than 20 years of experience. She graduated from National University of Singapore in 1994 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine and Surgery, and returned to obtain her Masters in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 2000.Her clinical expertise includes antenatal and gynaecological scans, antenatal care and risk assessment, prenatal screening, as well as vaginal assisted and caesarean delivery. She is well-versed in the management and treatment of gynaecological issues such as infections, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, fertility challenges, and ovarian cysts.Moreover, she is qualified to treat pap smear abnormalities and perform colposcopies. In a personal capacity, Dr. Choo has a special interest in menopausal care and female sexual dysfunction. She is also a huge advocate of natural birth.

Dr. Cindy Pang’s main sub-specialty is in gynaecological cancers and complex pelvic surgeries. On top of that, she provides antenatal care to expectant mothers and manages a wide range of conditions related to the female reproductive system.Dr Pang graduated from National University of Singapore and obtained her membership to the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of the United Kingdom in 2008. In pursuit of her passion, she underwent further sub-specialty training at the renowned Western Australian Gynaecologic Cancer Services in Perth under the Health Manpower Development Plan, returning to practice in Singapore in 2013. She also won the prestigious Tony McCartney Surgical Innovation Award during her time in Australia. Dr. Cindy is an accredited colposcopist and trainer. Since 2009, she has been serving as a Council Member in the Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology of Singapore. Concurrently, she is involved in the division of graduate medical studies at National University Hospital, where she assesses trainees for in-hospital clinical training modules on colposcopy. She offers cervical pre-cancer screening and management with colposcopy, laser and LEEP surgeries.Dr. Cindy currently practises at SOG – Cindy Pang Clinic for Women &amp; GynaeOncology, located at Mount Elizabeth Novena Specialist Centre.

Dr Cindy Pang

Graduated in 2003 from medical school of National University of Singapore, Dr Chin pursued her specialist training locally and obtained her postgraduate qualification from Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, United Kingdom in 2008. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists (London) and a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine (Singapore).

Having worked in KK Hospital for many years prior to setting up her own practice, she has vast experiences in managing various obstetric and gynaecological cases including deliveries and gynaecological surgeries.
She has a special interest in minimally invasive surgery especially advanced hysteroscopic surgery for which she did her HMDP (human manpower development plan award) in Japan in mid-2014. She is accredited for advanced minimally invasive surgeries. She is familiar with hysteroscopic ligation and has extensive experiences in hysteroscopic myomectomies. 
She also takes an interest in pre-invasive diseases, for which she obtained colposcopic and laser accreditations. She set up the molar clinic for the KK hospital during her time there to better look after the special needs of this group of patients.

Apart from her clinical roles, she is passionate about teaching and imparting clinical and surgical skills to the juniors. She was appointed as clinical lecturer and MBBS examiner at NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and currently still holds Clinical Physician Faculty Member at SingHealth Residency Program as part of her role to train future specialists. She is also actively involved in clinical research. She has published on several scientific journals and presented in many international conferences. She is an editor to several international journals. 

Being a mother of three and having gone through both caesarean and vaginal deliveries herself, she can closely relate to her patients each and every experience. As each pregnancy is unique, she believes in providing individualised step-by-step care and holistic support for all her patients.

Dr Crystal Chin Hsuan

Dr Chua Kah Mui Eunice is an Obstetrics &amp; Gynaecology and Fertility specialist with a focus in in-vitro fertilization and performs assisted reproduction procedures.Dr Chua graduated from National University of Singapore (NUS) in 1985, and later completed postgraduate training in London. She started her medical career as a house officer at the Singapore General Hospital in 1985.Dr Chua previously worked at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital and Alexandra Hospital from 1986 to 1991. She later joined the Department of O&amp;G in Singapore General Hospital, where she worked until 1995, before setting up private practice with two other specialists.Dr Chua is accredited to perform surgical procedures at Thomson Medical Centre.&nbsp;

Dr Irene Chua is a Senior Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist.Dr Chua received her MBBS from the National University of Singapore and is a Member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (London) and a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore.Prior to setting her up her private practice, Dr Chua was a Senior Consultant in the Minimally Invasive Surgery Unit, KK Women’s &amp; Children’s Hospital (KKH). Previous position held includes Head of the 24-Hour Women's Clinic in KKH. Dr Chua is also a Senior Clinical Lecturer for Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NUS and was awarded the Top 10 NUS Clinical Faculty Teacher for the year 2007-2008. In addition, she has also been awarded the CEO Heart award in 2010, Singapore Health Quality Service Superstar Award in 2011 as well as the prestigious PS21 Star Award in 2011.Being a patient and understanding obstetrician, Dr Chua has performed many deliveries over the years. Apart from that, she also specializes in gynecological endoscopy (otherwise known as key-hole surgery) and surgery. Dr Chua was the first female gynaecologist to be awarded the HMDP scholarship in 2004 for Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery in Gynaecology sub-specialising in Excision of Severe Endometriosis and Pelvic Floor Support at the IRCAD/ European Institute of TeleSurgery (EITS), Strasbourg, France under world-renowned laparoscopic surgeon, Professor Arnaud Wattiez.Apart from being an advocate for minimally invasive surgery, Dr Chua is also actively involved in the teaching and training of O&amp;G specialists both locally and regionally, being a Level 3 accredited laparoscopic trainer in KKH. She is also an appointed teaching faculty at the Asian Institute of Telesurgery (AITS) in Taiwan and conducts lectures and surgeries in Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei.In addition to clinical practice, Dr Chua has published in numerous scientific journals and is invited to speak regularly at conferences and seminars both locally and internationally.

Trained in the United Kingdom and Singapore, Dr Jeanette has over 2 decades of experience addressing and treating the various medical issues faced by both pregnant and non-pregnant women. She did her medical undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Cardiff, Bristol and Birmingham and spent 12 years working in major teaching, university and district hospitals in the UK.Besides treating general obstetric and gynaecological conditions, Dr Jeanette has special interests in contraception, laparoscopic surgery and pregnancy complications. During her 9 years in KK Women’s &amp; Children’s Hospital in Singapore, Dr Jeanette was very passionate and involved in undergraduate and postgraduate training of medical students, even clinching the Dean’s Award for her passion in teaching and grooming medical students. In addition, she has been a trainer for various postgraduate training courses and has published numerous papers in international journals.Warmth, sincerity and with lots of tender loving care – that’s how Dr Jeanette treats all her patients, who come from all over the world. Her very bubbly and lively personality which will put you completely at ease is also second to none!

Dr Jeanette Chen

Dr Jessie Phoon graduated from the University of Auckland in 2005 and subsequently pursued a post graduate degree in obstetrics and gynaecology. She was conferred membership by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists(UK) and Master of Medicine(Singapore) in 2011.Dr Phoon is a MOH accredited IVF specialist and is fully qualified to perform the full spectrum of assisted reproductive techniques(ART). She had the privilege to further pursue her interest in fine-tuning In-Vitro Maturation(IVM) into routine IVF and fertility preservation in Karolinska Institute, Sweden under the MOH – Health Manpower Development Programme(HMDP). In the last years of clinical practice as a senior consultant in KK Women’s &amp; Children’s Hospital, she helmed the directorship of KKIVF Centre &amp; National Sperm Bank (2020-2023). She also co-founded the OncoFertility Clinic (OFC), which is the first co-joint gynaeoncology and fertility clinic in Singapore.Apart from performing general obstetrics &amp; gynaecology, Dr Phoon is also fully proficient and accredited in performing minimally invasive surgeries/ laparoscopic surgeries as she believes in its quick recovery rate with less pain.Dr Phoon’s interest also expanded to clinical research. She received the Singhealth Duke-NUS Academic Medicine Research grant in 2020 for a multi-centre randomized controlled trial in comparing conservative treatment for atypical endometrial hyperplasia. Besides clinical work, Dr Phoon was heavily involved in teaching the undergraduate and postgraduate students. She was appointed as Associate Program Director for Singhealth Obstetrics &amp; Gynaecology residency program from 2016 to 2020 and continued to be a core faculty of the residency program thereafter. She strongly believes that imparting knowledge &amp; experience is crucial as these should be shared amongst everyone.As a passionate clinician, she believes in developing strong relationships with her patients, providing them individualised care, and ensuring they feel heard and supported throughout their healthcare journey. She also strives to improve and empower women to make informed decisions about their reproductive well-being.

Dr Freda Khoo is a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist. She believes that every woman deserves quality and dedicated women’s healthcare throughout her entire lifetime — from puberty, through conception, pregnancy, till menopause and beyond. Apart from a rich experience in obstetrics and gynaecology, Dr Khoo has also worked in various departments such as emergency medicine, general surgery and internal medicine. Her exemplary patient care has been shown through the multiple accolades that she has won in the course of her work. Being a mother of three herself, Dr Khoo understands the challenges faced by women through the different seasons of life. She strives to be able to walk every patient through each phase of womanhood with strength, dignity and joy.

Dr. Ong Xiaohui is a caring and friendly doctor who is currently practising at OB Gynae Associates Women’s Clinic at Thomson Medical Centre. She delivers babies and performs gynaecological operations mainly in Thomson Medical Centre, Mount Alvernia and Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospitals.Her interest in the specialty of Obstetrics and Gynaecology started early during her medical school days – the joy of bringing babies into the world truly resonated with her and she was inspired to become an O&amp;G specialist. Till today, her passion is fuelled by seeing her patients deliver healthy babies and recovering from successful gynaecological operations.Upon completing her housemanship, Dr. Ong committed herself whole-heartedly to the specialty and spent nine years training and working in KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital before going into private practice. During her time in KKH, she gained much clinical experience in vaginal deliveries, caesarean sections, ultrasound scans, and was accredited for gynaecological operations including laparoscopic (key-hole) surgeries and termination of pregnancy. Dr Pamela Tan is an Obstetrics and Gynaecology specialist, practicing at Thomson Medical Center in Singapore.Prior to leaving for private practice, Dr Tan was a female Consultant in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, KK Women’s &amp; Children’s Hospital. She obtained her undergraduate medical degree at the National University of Singapore and her post-graduate MRCOG in London at the Royal College of O&amp;G. She is a specialist accredited with the Specialist Accreditation Board (Ministry of Health) and is a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore (FAMS).She is an accredited member of the Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology of Singapore (SCCPS) with a subspecialty interest in colposcopy (for pre-cancer of the cervix and vagina) and vulval disease. In further pursuing this interest, she was a fellow for pre-invasive disease at the colposcopy and vulval unit at the Whittington Hospital in the United Kingdom. While in the United Kingdom, she was also a fellow at the Assisted Conception Unit in Guys Hospital to learn the latest in reproductive techniques and approaches to infertility. After working in various hospitals such as Alexandra Hospital, Singapore General Hospital and Jurong Polyclinic, she started her Obstetrics and Gynecology specialty training in KK Hospital in 1994.

Dr Yeap served at KK women's and Children's Hospital for 15 years from 1994 to 2010. Her last appointment was Consultant at the Division of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She was a visiting Consultant to Changi General Hospital from the year 2001 to 2002, and a Consultant Colposcopist in the Gynecological Cancer Centre in KK Women's and Children's Hospital from 2003 to 2010, treating patients with Pap smear abnormalities and pre-invasive conditions.

Dr Yeap was awarded "Excellent Service Award" (EXSA) which is a national award supported by SPRING Singapore that recognizes individuals who delivered outstanding service. She received the GOLD Award in 2007 and STAR Award in 2008. She also received multiple "Service from the heart" awards during her 15 years of service in KK Hospital.

Dr Yeap is a mother of three, an avid sportswoman and has completed her first full marathon in Dec 2010. Breast lumps during pregnancy are very common. The expectant mother will experience many normal physiological changes ― an increase in breast size, more obvious sweat glands around the nipples, a darkening of the areola ― all of which will prepare her body for breastfeeding.Common non-cancerous variations to breasts include hormonal changes (fibrocystic changes), fibroadenomas, cysts, lipomas, accessory (extra) breast tissue. Pregnancy-related breast cancers make up about 3 per cent of all breast cancers.Whenever a pregnant woman feels a lump, she should see a doctor to get their opinion, keeping in mind that most times it will turn out to be nothing serious!<h2>What the doctor will do</h2>When you see the doctor, she will ask details as to how you detected the lump, how long it has been present and if you have detected any changes, so as to get an idea what the lump is likely to be.Next, the doctor will conduct a breast examination to confirm the presence of the lump, and check for any other symptoms such as skin changes or nipple discharge.Most patients will then be recommended to get an ultrasound scan ― this will give additional information as to whether this lump is benign or cancerous. If there is any concern that the lump may be cancerous, your doctor will advise you as to the pros and cons of having a biopsy, which can be done safely even during pregnancy.“If a pregnant women detects a lump, I would advise them to have a thorough consultation and a physical examination, followed by an ultrasound. For breast cancer screening, most countries, including Singapore, recommend mammogram screening from age 50 onwards. For women who are at higher risk, this may start at 40. Some specialists will recommend a supplementary ultrasound as well.If a pregnant women detects a lump, I would advise them to have a thorough consultation and a physical examination, followed by an ultrasound. If necessary, I would then perform a biopsy.<h2>Screening methods (Mammograms/Ultrasound)</h2>Ultrasound, the same technology used to monitor the baby during pregnancy, is safe and useful in detecting lumps, and to check if it’s solid or cystic. Most specialists do not use ultrasound as a screening method as the majority of such lumps it detects are not cancerous.A diagnostic ultrasound can still be performed safely on pregnant women to assess their breast lump. If a subsequent biopsy confirms a cancer, she may then need a baseline mammogram, after discussing the pros and cons with her doctor. This is because early stage breast cancer may not form a lump yet, but may attract calcium spots, which can be detected using a mammogram. An abdominal lead apron may be used to reduce the baby’s exposure to radiation.<h2>Breast cancer treatment</h2>If the biopsy shows that the lump is non-cancerous (benign), then it may be left alone.However, if the biopsy shows that it is cancerous, the breast cancer treatment protocols will be modified for the expectant woman. Staging* has to be conducted to find out if the cancer has spread to other parts of the body, but only with liver ultrasound and chest X-ray. Depending on which trimester of the pregnancy she is in, the breast surgeon, oncologist and the ob-gyn will discuss what is best for the patient and her baby.Chemotherapy may be administered from the second trimester onwards, followed by surgery after she deliver the baby. As such management of the patient’s treatment is complex, it will involve good multidisciplinary care by experienced doctors.*Staging is a way to describe where the cancer is located, how much the cancer has grown, and if or where it has spread.

Both the mammogram and ultrasound results showed an abnormal lump, and I was further scheduled for a breast biopsy to determine if the lump was benign or malignant. Questions started to fill my mind. What is breast biopsy and how is it performed? And is it painful?”For many patients, pain is a very common symptom and is the most common complaint that brings them to see a doctor. For a small group, there happens to be an abnormal lump found that needs a biopsy. Most times, pain is not a sign of cancer, and any lumps found may not be the cause of the breast pain you experienced.Some of us may face a similar situation when a lump is detected. It is normal to have many questions. This article aims to address some of your preliminary questions while you arrange for a consult with a professional specialist. The surgeon uses blue dye or a radioactive tracer to identify the node. Then, the node is removed and tested for cancer. Cancer could have spread to other lymph nodes if the sentinel node tests positive. However, if it is negative, the likelihood of cancer spreading to other lymph nodes is lower.<h3>Vacuum-assisted core biopsy</h3>This procedure is performed with an ultrasound or mammogram unit and can be seen as an upgraded form of the core needle biopsy. Like the core biopsy, a larger needle is used and allows for several tissue samples to be taken at one time.<a href="https://www.insideradiology.com.au/vacuum-assisted-core-biopsy" target="_self">A probe or hollow tube is inserted into a cut made on the skin</a>. Then, a vacuum-assisted device is used to pull the tissue into the needle while a rotating cutting device takes the sample. Using a suction device is beneficial because it can get more cells and fluid through the needle, which cuts down on the number of times the needle will need to be inserted to retrieve multiple samples.<h2>Benefits and risks of breast biopsy</h2>Before proceeding with breast biopsy procedures, you may want to discuss with the breast surgeon and weigh the benefits and risks to determine the suitable procedure that is right for you. Fortunately, most procedures are less invasive compared to surgical biopsy and some will leave minimal to no scarring. The biopsy results will indicate whether the breast lump is malignant or benign which would either allow you to rest easy or quickly get the treatment that you need.Although these procedures are generally safe, there are some risks involved. Possible complications that can incur from a breast biopsy include:<ul><li>Mild pain and bruising</li><li>Infection</li><li>Prolonged bleeding</li><li>Soreness at the biopsy site</li></ul>Many of these side effects are simply temporary. It may be slightly uncomfortable, but most patients describe it as tolerable. Once the site is numb from the local anaesthetic, one should only feel pressure but no pain from the biopsy.Typically, only local anaesthesia is required. However, general anaesthesia may be used in severe cases, meaning the entire body is numbed.<h3>How long does it take to recover from breast biopsy?</h3>Biopsy procedures do not cause significant pain to your body. However, you may experience some bruising, tenderness, or soreness for a few days after the biopsy procedure. Patients can take non-aspirin pain relievers that contain acetaminophen and apply cold packs to help ease the pain and discomfort. However, it can take longer to recover from surgical removal procedures when compared to nonsurgical procedures.With all breast biopsy procedures, except for the surgical biopsy, you will be able to go home without a patient caregiver. You will likely have bandages and a cold pack over the biopsy site. Everything You Need to Know About Breast Biopsy

Just as there are skin issues that arise during pregnancy, skin conditions can also develop after you give birth. Fortunately, they are largely treatable, so there is no need to fret – your postpartum skin and hair will bounce back in no time. We take a look at some of the most common conditions.<h2>Melasma</h2>Also known as “the mask of pregnancy”, this pigmentation condition is due to increased melanin production and is caused by a combination of genetic and hormonal factors, as well as sun exposure. It tends to affect Asian skin more, appearing as brownish patches over the cheeks, forehead, temples, nasal bridge, upper lips and jawline.It is best controlled by avoiding the sun and with regular use of sunscreen, lightening creams and topical agents, although it can persist in some cases. Other treatments include chemical peeling, intense pulsed light therapy and certain forms of laser therapy. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding – certain ingredients such as tretinoin and hydroquinone that can be found in some skincare products should be avoided by breastfeeding mums.<h2>Dermatitis/eczema</h2>Eczema or dermatitis is a relatively common yet noninfectious condition, so it will not spread to your baby. Often it is an aggravation of an underlying sensitive skin condition that has been present for some time. For new mothers, it can also develop as a result of excessive water contact due to frequent handwashing.Use moisturiser regularly to soothe inflamed and itchy skin. Topical steroid creams are prescribed to calm inflamed skin and are safe to use even when breastfeeding. Use a gentle soap substitute and continue to moisturise even after the skin rash has settled.<h2>Stretchmarks</h2>Affecting at least 90 percent of pregnant women, stretchmarks are a form of scarring that appear red when fresh, but most will fade to white after delivery. During pregnancy, intensive use of moisturisers may help the condition, and there are specially formulated stretchmark creams on the market that you can continue using after delivery. For more severe cases, dermatologists may prescribe tretinoin cream to use postpartum when you are not breastfeeding. Some skin-tightening laser treatments are safe options to remove stretchmarks even if you are breastfeeding, but these usually require multiple sessions.<h2>Telogen effluvium</h2>This condition results in hair fall that usually occurs about three months after delivery. Though increased hair fall can be distressing to new mothers, it is almost always a self-limiting condition, and you will usually recover within six months. If you notice increased hair fall, consult a doctor to exclude other causes of hair loss (such as low iron levels). Topical medications can be used if you are not breastfeeding.<h2>Acne</h2>Caused by an inflammation in the facial oil glands, acne may be aggravated by hormonal changes. Most of the time, acne clears within a few weeks or months, but medical treatment should be sought to prevent the risk of scarring. There are many topical agents that can be safely used even when breastfeeding. In more severe cases, oral medications such as antibiotics may be required.
