Dr Tan Toh Lick is a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at <a href="https://www.thomsonmedical.com/centres/women-clinic" target="_self">Thomson Women's Clinic</a> (Jurong).Dr Tan graduated from King's College School of Medicine and Dentistry, the University of London in 1997. He undertook his Obstetrics and Gynaecology Specialist Training in London, Kent, Surrey, and Sussex Deanery, and has worked with numerous prominent specialists in King's College Hospital, St George's Hospital, Kent &amp; Canterbury Hospital, University Hospital Lewisham, Princess Royal University Hospital, and Guy's &amp; St Thomas' Hospital.He completed his specialist training in 2008 and was appointed Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Ealing Hospital NHS Trust, London in 2008. Before relocating to KK Women's and Children's Hospital, Singapore in 2013, he also consulted at private London hospitals including Clementine Churchill Hospital, Lister Hospital, and Portland Hospital.As a consultant, he held a number of lead roles and brought about significant improvements in service development, patient care, and staff training. These contributions were widely recognised and he has been awarded 3 Clinical Excellence Awards in 2010 and 2012 in the United Kingdom, and Singapore Health Quality Service Award in 2015, Singapore.Dr Tan has also won many awards and prizes for his academic work presented at international and regional conferences. He has participated in several research and audits in early pregnancy loss, preterm delivery, labour induction, and menstrual disorders. He has also published and reviewed in several peer-reviewed medical journals.Dr Tan is on the United Kingdom's General Medical Council's and Singapore Medical Council's specialist registers. He is a member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and has RCOG special skills accreditation in minimally invasive surgery, gynaecological ultrasound, and subfertility management.

Dr Beh is a Senior Consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist running his practice in Thomson Medical Centre since 2004. He graduated in 1987 and obtained his specialist membership from The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (UK) in 1993.&nbsp; His special interest is in minimally invasive surgery and reproductive surgery and he received his further training in leading centres in the USA. He is actively involved in the development, training, and teaching of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) in Singapore and remains a visiting consultant in the MIS unit at KK Women's and Children's Hospital and the O&amp;G Department of Singapore General Hospital.A firm believer in continuous medical education, he has helped to organize numerous scientific meetings and taken part in many local and overseas congresses and workshops.&nbsp; He is actively involved in matters pertaining to O&amp;G and was the past President of the O&amp;G Society of Singapore 2007-2009. He is also a member of the Congress Trust Fund of the Society since 2018.

Dr Benjamin Tham Wai Lum is an Obstetrician &amp; Gynaecologist, at OB Gynae Associates Women’s Clinic.Dr Ben graduated from University of Singapore in 1990. He worked in Alexandra Hospital (AH) and Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) during his housemanship year. He undertook his postgraduate training in the Kandang Kerbau Hospital (KKH), and obtained his specialist degrees in 1997. He subsequently joined the Department of Oncology &amp; Urology and was sent for overseas training with Medical Research Council (MRC), University of Sheffield and Northern General Hospital in UK for pre-invasive / oncologic gynecological conditions and cancer trials.During his 15 years of practice in KK Hospital, Dr Ben served as the head of the 24-hour Women’s clinic, Deputy Head of the General O&amp;G Unit, Consultant in Gynaecological Cancer unit, Consultant colposcopist for Gynaecologic Cancer Centre and Visiting Consultant to Changi General Hospital.He had been awarded numerous Service from the Heart awards for exemplary service to patients and won the coveted KKH CEO Heart award in 2009. He also received Excellent Service (EXSA) Gold &amp; STAR Award launched by SPRING Singapore.Dr Ben attends to deliveries at Thomson Medical Centre.

Dr Janice Tung obtained her medical degree from the National University of Singapore, where she received the SS Ratnam Book Prize by the O&amp;G Society of Singapore for topping her cohort in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (O&amp;G). She subsequently completed her post-graduate specialty training in the SingHealth Residency Programme for O&amp;G, and attained her accreditation as a Specialist in O&amp;G by the Specialists Accreditation Board (Ministry of Health, Singapore). Dr Janice is currently a member of the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (UK).Dr Janice was previously an Associate Consultant of the Department of O&amp;G in KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH). She was also appointed clinical faculty of Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, and Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School, and have received the Inspiring Resident-Educator Award (SingHealth) for her contributions to medical student and Residency education.Dr Janice’s extensive experience in managing a wide variety of gynaecological conditions and antenatal care include high-risk pregnancies, with her interests lying in subfertility issues and pregnancy-related complications such as preterm labour, minimally invasive surgery and vulvar disease. She received the prestigious SingHealth Foundation Research Grant Award and the SingHealth Duke-NUS O&amp;G Academic Clinical Programme (ACP) Grant Awards for her work on improving ovarian conservation in laparoscopic cystectomies, as well as labour induction and preterm labour. Dr Janice remains dedicated to providing a value-based, holistic, fulfilling and positive pregnancy experience for women as an Obstetrician, and the best care for her patients as a Doctor.

Dr Janice Tung

Dr Khoo Chong Kiat is a Senior Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist. He operates his own private practice, CK KHOO Clinic for Women &amp; Laparoscopy. Prior to this, he had served 20 years of public service, with the Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) Unit at KK Women’s &amp; Children’s Hospital, Singapore. Recognised for his exceptional patient care, Dr Khoo received several Gold Service Stars awards during his 20-year tenure at KK Hospital.Dr Khoo did his HMDP Fellowship in Endometriosis &amp; Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) under the mentorship of renowned Professor Michel Canis in Clermont-Ferrand, France in 2010. He holds the European University Diploma of Gynaecologic Operative Endoscopy, awarded from CHU- Clermont Ferrand. Upon return, he helped to set up the KK Endometriosis Centre in 2011.Dr Khoo has also often been invited as a teaching faculty and international speaker at various MIS conferences around the world, eg, APAGE, AAGL, ESGE, and ISGE over the years. His favourite topics include laparoscopic myomectomies, cystectomies, hysterectomies, contained in-bag fibroid morcellation, and ectopic pregnancies. He was involved in the teaching and training of KK MIS overseas fellows from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Germany. Given his extensive Asia Pacific MIS networking links, he is currently serving as the Vice Secretary-General of APAGE.As for his academic contributions, Dr Khoo was appointed Adjunct Assistant Professorships in all three of Singapore's medical schools: YLL-NUS School of Medicine, DUKE-NUS Medical School, and the newly established LKC-NTU School of Medicine. He was also the inaugural Core Faculty member of the SingHealth ACP O&amp;G Residency Programme, training the future generations of O&amp;G specialists. In 2016, Dr Khoo won a Macy scholarship as a clinician-educator at Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA. As his contributions to local O&amp;G professional bodies, Dr Khoo served previously as the Treasurer and Honorary Secretary of the College of O&amp;G, Singapore. He was also the Section Head of Gynae-Endoscopy (2018-2020). He is currently a lifetime member in the O&amp;G Society of Singapore. Dr Khoo is also a certified colposcopist with the Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology of Singapore. Besides being an internationally renowned MIS gynaecologist, Dr Khoo was also one of the busiest obstetrician in the largest public hospital in Singapore before leaving for private practice. Dr Khoo is accredited to perform surgical procedures at Thomson Medical Centre and Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital.

Dr Koh Cheng Huat

Dr Ng is a specialist in&nbsp;Obstetrics&nbsp;and&nbsp;Gynaecology,&nbsp;with special interest in minimally invasive surgery, especially in the application of single incision gynaecological laparoscopy. He graduated from the medical faculty, National University of Singapore (MMed) and holds a Diploma in advanced laparoscopy (Dip. Eur Gyn Endoscopy) from the renowned CHU Estaing laparoscopic centre, France. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Obstetrician &amp; Gynaecologist as well as the vice-president of Obstetrical &amp; Gynaecological Society of Singapore (OGSS).&nbsp; He believes in holistic care for his patients and has vast experiences in performing surgeries and deliveries. Alongside his compassionate patient-centred care approach, Dr Ng is passionate about offering the best surgical solutions for management of gynaecological conditions. Dr Ng is one of the pioneers in Singapore to develop the application of single incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) in gynaecology since 2009. He has since then performed more than 1000 SILS surgeries successfully for gynaecological conditions such as fibroids,&nbsp;endometriosis&nbsp;and fertility regulation for family planning. Previously, he performed the first case of Single Site Robotic Surgery in Singapore (SSRS). Dr Ng is committed to providing&nbsp;obstetric care&nbsp;for all expectant mothers and advocates for natural delivery. He is an activist in promoting women’s health and as such, he enjoys organising public outreach programs to empower women in making informed decisions about their healthcare.

Dr Phua Soo Mear is an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Gynae Health Clinic, located in Kovan.Dr Phua has more than 30 years of experience. He graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1983 with the degree of MBBS. He was awarded the Ministry of Health specialist traineeship in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 1986. Dr Phua passed the Membership examination of the Royal College of Obstetricians &amp; Gynaecologists in 1989. He was awarded Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetrician &amp; Gynaecologist in 2003. Dr Phua worked in the O&amp;G departments at the former Toa Payoh General Hospital and Kandang Kerbau Hospital (KKH) from 1986 to 1992. Dr Tan Heng Hao has been involved in the field of reproductive medicine since the start of his career as an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist (O&amp;G). Prior to joining Alpha IVF Centre &amp; Alpha Women’s Specialists (Singapore) as the Medical Director, he was the: Head of Department in Reproductive Medicine, and served as a Senior Consultant in KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital’s (KKH) Endometriosis Centre and Maternity Services; The Director of the In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Centre &amp; National Sperm Bank in KKH; And he served concurrently as the Deputy Chairman of the Division of O&amp;G and is the current Section Chair of Reproductive Medicine in College of O&amp;G (Singapore).In addition to being a Ministry Of Health (MOH) accredited IVF specialist in Singapore, he is trained in advanced endoscopy and reproductive surgery for fertility enhancement. He received part of his surgical training in Chang Gung Memorial Hospital (Taipei) under the Ministry’s Health Manpower Development Plan (HMDP) award in 2009 and is one of the few who still performs laparoscopic tubal reversals locally.

Dr Tan Heng Hao

Dr Wong obtained his undergraduate medical degree from the National University of Ireland. He subsequently trained in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology and attained his specialist post graduate degree conferred by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (UK) and Master of Medicine in O&amp;G (Singapore). Dr Wong has been practicing in KKH since 2005 and his last position was Head and Senior Consultant in the Department of Gynaecologic Oncology. His passion for oncology started very early in his training. He had the good fortune to be trained by very experienced gynae-oncologists. He is skilled in both laparoscopic and open surgeries for cancer and benign cases. He received the MOH-Singhealth HMDP award to be trained in Robotic Gynae-oncologic Surgery in the UK. As a testament to his dedication to the field of oncology, he was elected through the College of O&amp;G Singapore as Chairman of the Section of Gynecological Oncology in 2022. As a registered colposcopist, he was elected to be the secretary for the Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology Singapore (SCCPS) in 2022. Throughout his career at KKH, he has been an active member of the teaching community. He was an Adjunct Assistant Professor for all three medical schools in Singapore. He was also a member of the core faulty for the O&amp;G residency program at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital. As a father of three girls, he has become an advocate for women’s health especially in the field of screening and cancer awareness. He has given numerous public talks related to Women’s cancer and prevention.

Dr Akash Verma is a lung specialist with a Sub-specialty interest in Intensive Care Medicine, Interventional Pulmonology &amp; lung cancer.Prior to joining Thomson Medical Center, Dr Akash was a senior Consultant in Respiratory Medicineat Tan Tock Seng Hospital and Adjunct Assistant Professor at Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine. After graduation, he trained at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Singapore, before obtaining his membership of Royal College of Physicians (United Kingdom). Upon completion of advanced training in Respiratory Medicine and Critical Care, He was conferred a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore (FAMS). Subsequently he was awarded the Health Manpower Development Program (HMDP) fellowship and was a visiting fellow in the department of Interventional Pulmonology at Samsung Medical Centre-Seoul, Mayo Clinic-USA, and University of Chicago. He pioneered the establishment of the service of "navigation bronchoscopy" in Singapore in 2018 as a part of improving the quality of the journey of the lung cancer patients in the healthcare system. In addition to common respiratory conditions like asthma &amp; COPD, He is trained in advanced bronchoscopy techniques of laser resection of lung tumors, silicone stent placement in the airways, pleuroscopy, EBUS-TBNA, and navigation bronchoscopy.He has authored over 40 peer-reviewed scientific papers to date. He continues to have active interest in publishing and teaching and has taught in several international conferences and courses as an invited speaker both in South East Asia (Seoul 2013, Singapore 2015, Japan 2016, Indonesia 2017-2019, and Malaysia 2019) and Europe (Italy 2016).

Dr Audrey Looi trained in Oculoplastics at the Singapore National Eye Centre. She completed her fellowships in Oculoplastic, Orbital and Ocular Pathology at the University of British Columbia under the supervision of Prof Peter Dolman, Prof Jack Rootman and Prof Valerie White respectively, returning to Singapore in 2004 with a Best Fellow research prize.Dr Looi served as Head of the Oculoplastic Service as well as Clinical Director of the General Eye Clinic at the Singapore National Eye Centre from 2007 to 2016 and 2009 to 2019 respectively. She was appointed Adjunct Associate Professor at the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School from 2012 to 2019. Dr Looi is currently the Medical Director of Ava Eye Clinic. Dr Looi served as an examiner with the Royal College of Ophthalmology (Edinburgh) and the National University of Singapore. She was elected Treasurer of the Asia-Pacific Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery from 2006 to 2010 and Vice-President of the Society from 2012-2014. She served as Editor of the society's newsletter, iPlastic from 2013 to 2018 and was re-elected First Vice-President of the society in December 2018. She is the First Vice-President of the Singapore Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Dr Looi is a founding Board Director of iC2 PrepHouse, a charity set up in Singapore in 2011 to provide programmes that enable greater independence of children with low vision as well as their continued education in mainstream schools.

Dr Benjamin Yip graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS) with a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery (MBBS). He was then conferred as a Member of the Royal College of Physicians, United Kingdom (UK). Thereafter, he completed his specialist training in General Medicine as well as his advanced specialist training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the National University Hospital, Singapore. Dr Yip was awarded with the Health Manpower Development Plan award to sub-specialise in Advanced Endoscopy at the Royal Free and University College Hospitals in London, UK. During his tenure, he trained with several leading members of the Advanced Endoscopy community. Her extensive research on Paediatric Cardiology has been published widely in a number of local and international medical journals. Dr Cheng obtained his basic medical degree from NUS in 1984. After he was awarded the post-graduate degree of MRCOG in 1990 from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (London), he was appointed Lecturer in O &amp; G at King's College School of Medicine in London from 1991 - 1993. While at King's, he trained in IVF and related fertility procedures at their renowned IVF Department.He joined WC Cheng &amp; Associates (WCCA) in 1994 to take care of pregnant and non-pregnant women. He also provided infertility services (including IVF) at Thomson Fertility Centre, initially as Chief Clinician and then as Medical Director from 1994 till 2010. Thereafter, all medical work was consolidated at WCCA. To focus more of his time caring for couples suffering from subfertility he decided in 2015, to cease maternity services. He still, however, continues to treat women with non-pregnancy and non-fertility issues. From March 2023, he continues his practice at Thomson Surgical Centre.Dr Cheng believes in patient empowerment through knowledge. Dr Kevin Tan is a diabetologist and endocrinologist at Thomson Medical. Dr Tan graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1987 and is a fellow with both the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh and the Academy of Medicine in Singapore. He was trained locally at Singapore General, Alexandra and Tan Tock Seng Hospitals; as well as overseas at the Royal Victoria Infirmary and Freeman Hospital in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK, under world renowned diabetes expert Professor George Alberti as well as thyroidologist, Pat-Kendall Taylor.

Dr. Sim Hsien Lin is a General Surgeon (Colorectal) at Thomson Surgical Centre. She graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2002, before further obtaining her Master of Medicine (Surgery) in 2007. Upon completion of her specialisation in General Surgery, she became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) in 2011, winning the Gold Medal award at the FRCS Exit Examination that year. In 2013, she received further subspecialty training at St Mark's Hospital in London.

Dr. Sim has a special interest in laparoscopic colorectal surgery and transanal endoscopic microsurgery. In addition, she is trained in the surgical management of inflammatory bowel diseases and complex anal fistulas. Still active in both undergraduate and postgraduate education, Dr. Sim is an Adjunct Assistant Professor with the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and also an Adjunct Lecturer with Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine.

She is an active member of the Singapore Colorectal Society and Singapore Cancer Society. She has a few publications in general surgery in both local and international peer-accredited journals, and has presented her research papers in various conferences in Singapore and overseas. She was also active in conducting clinical trials pertaining to the field of colorectal diseases and had previously published a book chapter on hemorrhoids.

Prior to joining private practice, Dr. Sim was a senior consultant at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, a visiting consultant at Admiralty Medical Centre and an Associate Program Director with the National Healthcare Group (NHG) Residency Programme. She actively participates in public education and had organised numerous public forums and given many community public talks during her time at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital.

Dr Stephen Chang is a general surgeon and subspecializes in laparoscopic surgery, management of gall bladder, liver, pancreatic and digestive diseases as well as abdominal wall hernia conditions.Dr Stephen Chang graduated with MBBS at NUS in 1994 and obtained his Master of Medicine (Surgery) in 2000. Having become a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK in 2003, he furthered his training in laparoscopic hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, and liver transplantation in Paris, France in 2004.Dr Chang pioneered the single incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) in Singapore and was the first few to publish his experience in single incision laparoscopic gallbladder surgery, liver resection and pancreas resection in the world.He has published widely in this 'scarless' laparoscopic approach, proving that it is safe and reduces pain. It is the technique of choice for almost all of his gallbladder and appendix surgeries.He is an Adjunct Associate Professor in NUS and has more than 100 publications in both clinical and Medtech research and has since filed patents in these areas.Dr Chang is the founding president of the Hepatopancreatobiliary Association of Singapore. Dr Tan Sok Chuen is an orthopaedic surgery specialist with subspecialty training in hip and knee surgery. Prior to joining The Orthopaedic Centre, she was practising as a Consultant in Orthopaedic Surgery at Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, and is one of the highest volume surgeons. Dr Tan graduated from the National University of Singapore in 2004, thereafter she was enrolled into the Orthopaedic Seamless Training programme during which she rotated through all tertiary institutions in Singapore including SGH and NUH. Upon completion of her post-graduate training and examinations, she was conferred the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery. Sub-specialising in hip and knee surgery, Dr Tan completed her clinical fellowship in Hip &amp; Knee Surgery at Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Oxford, United Kingdom in 2016, as well as a clinical fellowship at the London Health Sciences Centre, Ontario, Canada in 2015. The Nuffield Centre is renowned for partial knee replacements, and the London Health Sciences Centre is one of the most famous joint revision centres in North America, thus giving her a wide exposure in joint replacement surgeries.As a firm believer of training the younger doctors, Dr Tan holds the position of Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Clinical Faculty for Medical Undergraduate Teaching Program. She received the award for the Best Undergraduate Tutor in 2014. He was awarded the prestigious HMDP in 2007 to train in minimally invasive Gynecological oncology in France for 1 year. Before embarking in private practice, he was the Head and Senior Consultant Gynaecologist of the Department of Gynaecological Oncology, KK Women’s &amp; Children’s Hospital from 2014 to 2019. He was also a Clinical Associate Professor (Adjunct) at the YLL Medical School, National University of Singapore, Duke-NUS Medical School, Singapore and the LKC School of Medicine, Singapore from 2017 to 2019. He was the President of the O&amp;G Society of Singapore from 2019 to 2021 and is the current President of the Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology of Singapore since 2019. He has been a volunteer doctor in the Singapore Cancer Society for many years and is the Chairman of the Women’s Gynaecological CancerAwareness committee in SCS since 2014. Professor George SH Yeo is a domain expert in Fetal Medicine, and has in-depth experience in the management of birth defects, prenatal ultrasound, prenatal diagnosis, and fetal surgery. Prof Yeo was tasked to develop the subspecialty of Fetal Medicine as the head of the Maternal Fetal Medicine Department at the KK Hospital in 1993*. He became the Chief of Obstetrics from 2000 to 2019. He set up his private practice, The Prenatal Consultants at Mount Elizabeth Novena Specialist Centre in November 2019. Prof Yeo is currently a Visiting Consultant to the Division of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the KK Women’s &amp; Children’s Hospital. He is also a Professor at Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School and Clinical Associate Professor at Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore. Contributions to the care of pregnant women in Singapore Professor Yeo organised the First International Scientiﬁc Meeting of ISUOG in 2004, started the first Singapore ISUOG-Outreach Course in 2005, and directed the programmes at the ISUOG Teaching and Training Centre in Singapore. He chaired the ISUOG World Congress in Singapore in 2018 and he has been the organising Chairman of the annual Singapore ISUOG Approved Course for the last 15 years. Professor Yeo is an early pioneer of Maternal Fetal Medicine in Singapore. Breast lumps during pregnancy are very common. The expectant mother will experience many normal physiological changes ― an increase in breast size, more obvious sweat glands around the nipples, a darkening of the areola ― all of which will prepare her body for breastfeeding.Common non-cancerous variations to breasts include hormonal changes (fibrocystic changes), fibroadenomas, cysts, lipomas, accessory (extra) breast tissue. Pregnancy-related breast cancers make up about 3 per cent of all breast cancers.Whenever a pregnant woman feels a lump, she should see a doctor to get their opinion, keeping in mind that most times it will turn out to be nothing serious!<h2>What the doctor will do</h2>When you see the doctor, she will ask details as to how you detected the lump, how long it has been present and if you have detected any changes, so as to get an idea what the lump is likely to be.Next, the doctor will conduct a breast examination to confirm the presence of the lump, and check for any other symptoms such as skin changes or nipple discharge.Most patients will then be recommended to get an ultrasound scan ― this will give additional information as to whether this lump is benign or cancerous. If there is any concern that the lump may be cancerous, your doctor will advise you as to the pros and cons of having a biopsy, which can be done safely even during pregnancy.“If a pregnant women detects a lump, I would advise them to have a thorough consultation and a physical examination, followed by an ultrasound. If necessary, I would then perform a biopsy.”<h2>Breast cancer screening during pregnancy</h2>A screening checks for cancer even when a patient is feeling well and has absolutely no cancer signs or symptoms. For breast cancer screening, most countries, including Singapore, recommend mammogram screening from age 50 onwards. For women who are at higher risk, this may start at 40. Some specialists will recommend a supplementary ultrasound as well.If a pregnant women detects a lump, I would advise them to have a thorough consultation and a physical examination, followed by an ultrasound. If necessary, I would then perform a biopsy.<h2>Screening methods (Mammograms/Ultrasound)</h2>Ultrasound, the same technology used to monitor the baby during pregnancy, is safe and useful in detecting lumps, and to check if it’s solid or cystic. Most specialists do not use ultrasound as a screening method as the majority of such lumps it detects are not cancerous.A diagnostic ultrasound can still be performed safely on pregnant women to assess their breast lump. If a subsequent biopsy confirms a cancer, she may then need a baseline mammogram, after discussing the pros and cons with her doctor. This is because early stage breast cancer may not form a lump yet, but may attract calcium spots, which can be detected using a mammogram. An abdominal lead apron may be used to reduce the baby’s exposure to radiation.<h2>Breast cancer treatment</h2>If the biopsy shows that the lump is non-cancerous (benign), then it may be left alone.However, if the biopsy shows that it is cancerous, the breast cancer treatment protocols will be modified for the expectant woman. Staging* has to be conducted to find out if the cancer has spread to other parts of the body, but only with liver ultrasound and chest X-ray. Depending on which trimester of the pregnancy she is in, the breast surgeon, oncologist and the ob-gyn will discuss what is best for the patient and her baby.Chemotherapy may be administered from the second trimester onwards, followed by surgery after she deliver the baby. As such management of the patient’s treatment is complex, it will involve good multidisciplinary care by experienced doctors.*Staging is a way to describe where the cancer is located, how much the cancer has grown, and if or where it has spread.

Breast Lumps During Pregnancy: What to Expect and Do

“It all started with a persistent pain in the left breast, and I was referred by my General Practitioner for a mammogram and ultrasound. Both the mammogram and ultrasound results showed an abnormal lump, and I was further scheduled for a breast biopsy to determine if the lump was benign or malignant. Questions started to fill my mind. What is breast biopsy and how is it performed? And is it painful?”For many patients, pain is a very common symptom and is the most common complaint that brings them to see a doctor. For a small group, there happens to be an abnormal lump found that needs a biopsy. Most times, pain is not a sign of cancer, and any lumps found may not be the cause of the breast pain you experienced.Some of us may face a similar situation when a lump is detected. It is normal to have many questions. This article aims to address some of your preliminary questions while you arrange for a consult with a professional specialist. It is important to seek timely professional diagnosis and treatment.Here’s what you need to know about a breast biopsy and what to expect.<h2>What is a breast biopsy?</h2>A breast biopsy is a process where a small sample of breast tissue is removed through a special biopsy needle. The tissue samples removed from the breast lump will be further examined under a microscope. Typically, the breast biopsy is performed if there is an abnormality detected from your previous mammograms or breast ultrasounds. The goal of the biopsy is to determine what the abnormality is and the best treatment to move forward with.Although ultrasounds and mammograms are useful ways to identify breast lumps, a breast biopsy is the <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/breast-biopsy/about/pac-20384812" target="_self">only way to confirm</a> what the lump is. You may also want to have a designated driver or someone to accompany you home safely.<h2>What are the different types of breast biopsies and how are they performed?</h2>Once your breast surgeon decides that a biopsy is needed, they will determine the best type of biopsy for your situation. There are a few breast biopsy procedures to obtain samples of a patient’s breast lumps. Your breast surgeon will recommend based on the location, size, and other characteristics of the breast abnormality.Your breast surgeon will take a tissue sample either through a minimally invasive biopsy procedure or surgery. Minimally invasive procedures are ideal because they offer:<ul><li>Less pain</li><li>Less scarring</li><li>Faster recovery time</li><li>Lower risk of infection</li><li>Lower hospital costs</li><li>Able to return to usual activities quickly</li></ul><h3>Ultrasound-guided breast biopsy</h3>This procedure is performed through ultrasound guidance. An ultrasound is a method that utilises high-frequency sound waves to generate precise images.The breast surgeon will locate the lump within the patient’s breasts using the breast ultrasound device before a small incision is made for the biopsy needle to retrieve tissue samples. With an ultrasound-guided breast biopsy, the breast surgeon can identify <a href="https://www.radiologyinfo.org/en/info/breastbius" target="_self">lumps near the chest wall or under the arms</a>.It can be used in conjunction with <a href="https://www.radiologyinfo.org/en/info/breastbius" target="_self">vacuum-assisted core biopsy, core needle biopsy, or fine needle aspiration biopsy</a>. This ultrasound-guided breast biopsy procedure is also more cost-effective than other methods like open surgical biopsy.<h3>Stereotactic biopsy</h3><img src="https://images.contentstack.io/v3/assets/blt5f400315f9e4f0b3/bltdc27a561fa0c5072/6545217008cc0104077ce311/Stereotactic_Biopsy.jpeg?branch=uat_release_3" height="auto"/>With a stereotactic biopsy, a 3D image of the breast is created from the mammogram results. The doctor uses the image to pinpoint the exact location of the suspected breast lump and guides the needle there.The patient will lay <a href="https://www.healthline.com/health/breast-biopsy-stereotactic#procedure" target="_self">facing down on a padded biopsy table</a> with one of the breasts positioned in the hole in the table. The patient’s breast will be compressed with two plates while the biopsy site is located using a targeted mammogram. Everything You Need to Know About Breast Biopsy

Just as there are skin issues that arise during pregnancy, skin conditions can also develop after you give birth. Fortunately, they are largely treatable, so there is no need to fret – your postpartum skin and hair will bounce back in no time. We take a look at some of the most common conditions.<h2>Melasma</h2>Also known as “the mask of pregnancy”, this pigmentation condition is due to increased melanin production and is caused by a combination of genetic and hormonal factors, as well as sun exposure. It tends to affect Asian skin more, appearing as brownish patches over the cheeks, forehead, temples, nasal bridge, upper lips and jawline.It is best controlled by avoiding the sun and with regular use of sunscreen, lightening creams and topical agents, although it can persist in some cases. Other treatments include chemical peeling, intense pulsed light therapy and certain forms of laser therapy. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding – certain ingredients such as tretinoin and hydroquinone that can be found in some skincare products should be avoided by breastfeeding mums.<h2>Dermatitis/eczema</h2>Eczema or dermatitis is a relatively common yet noninfectious condition, so it will not spread to your baby. Often it is an aggravation of an underlying sensitive skin condition that has been present for some time. For new mothers, it can also develop as a result of excessive water contact due to frequent handwashing.Use moisturiser regularly to soothe inflamed and itchy skin. Topical steroid creams are prescribed to calm inflamed skin and are safe to use even when breastfeeding. Use a gentle soap substitute and continue to moisturise even after the skin rash has settled.<h2>Stretchmarks</h2>Affecting at least 90 percent of pregnant women, stretchmarks are a form of scarring that appear red when fresh, but most will fade to white after delivery. During pregnancy, intensive use of moisturisers may help the condition, and there are specially formulated stretchmark creams on the market that you can continue using after delivery. For more severe cases, dermatologists may prescribe tretinoin cream to use postpartum when you are not breastfeeding. Some skin-tightening laser treatments are safe options to remove stretchmarks even if you are breastfeeding, but these usually require multiple sessions.<h2>Telogen effluvium</h2>This condition results in hair fall that usually occurs about three months after delivery. Though increased hair fall can be distressing to new mothers, it is almost always a self-limiting condition, and you will usually recover within six months. If you notice increased hair fall, consult a doctor to exclude other causes of hair loss (such as low iron levels). Topical medications can be used if you are not breastfeeding.<h2>Acne</h2>Caused by an inflammation in the facial oil glands, acne may be aggravated by hormonal changes. Most of the time, acne clears within a few weeks or months, but medical treatment should be sought to prevent the risk of scarring.
