Hearing loss can be from a variety of causes including genetics, aging, head injury or infections, chronic exposure to loud noises, or excessive wax. Potential signs of cancer of the head or neck are changes in the skin, pain, prolonged hoarseness, or a sudden loss of voice.

Dr Rebecca Heywood is an ENT surgeon at Thomson Surgical Centre. She has over 20 years of ENT experience in hospitals in the UK, Australia and Singapore, and treats all ENT conditions in adults and children. Dr Heywood specialises in otology/hearing implants and disorders of the ear, hearing, balance, facial nerve and skull base. Dr Heywood was awarded grant funding in 2016 to investigate hearing loss and dementia in the ageing population in Singapore and led a research team spanning five institutions in Singapore, Australia (Ear Science Institute Australia) and the USA (Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health). She is also involved in clinical research in the area of cochlear implantation and other auditory implants.

Dr David Lau specialises in ENT at Thomson Surgical Centre, and has over 25 years of experience in this field. He offers comprehensive treatment of ear, nose and throat disorders in adults and children. He is committed to providing the best possible care for each patient, through expertise, and compassionate and evidence-based medicine. Dr Lau is a regional key opinion leader in the field of laryngology (throat, voice and swallowing disorders), and his expertise lies in laryngeal stroboscopy for diagnosis; medical management of the occupational and performing voice (including singers); micro-laryngeal and laser surgery of the vocal folds; management of vocal fold paralysis; and use of Botox in the voice box.
