Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery (CABG)
When your heart needs a new path forward
Coronary artery bypass surgery, also called CABG, is a procedure that creates a new route for blood to flow around blocked or narrowed arteries to your heart. When arteries become severely blocked by plaque buildup, your heart muscle doesn't get enough oxygen-rich blood, which can lead to chest pain, heart attacks, or other serious complications.
At Thomson Medical, our cardiac surgery team will discuss your condition, explain the procedure, and answer questions about surgery and recovery.

Who may need coronary artery bypass surgery?
During your consultation, our cardiac surgeon will review your medical history, symptoms, and diagnostic test results. Based on your condition and the severity of blockages, the doctor will discuss whether CABG is the appropriate treatment option for you.
Common conditions that may require CABG:
| Condition | Key Symptoms to Watch For | Who Should Be Evaluated |
|---|---|---|
| Severe coronary artery disease | Chest pain during activity, shortness of breath, fatigue | Those with multiple blocked coronary arteries or significant narrowing |
| Left main coronary artery disease | Chest pain, shortness of breath, sometimes no symptoms | Patients with blockage in the main artery supplying the left side of the heart |
| Unstable angina | Chest pain at rest or with minimal activity, worsening symptoms | Those whose chest pain isn't controlled by medications |
| Previous heart attack with blocked arteries | History of heart attack, ongoing chest discomfort | Patients who've had heart damage but still have blocked arteries |
| Multiple vessel disease | Chest pain, shortness of breath, reduced exercise tolerance | Those with blockages in two or more coronary arteries |
| Failed angioplasty or stenting | Recurring symptoms after previous procedures | Patients whose blockages have returned or can't be treated with stents |
Your cardiac surgeon will determine if CABG is appropriate based on your specific condition, the location and severity of blockages, and your overall health.
