There are often no symptoms in the early stages. Many people first learn of a kidney concern from a routine blood or urine test, or while managing another condition such as diabetes or high blood pressure. Whether you have just had an unexpected result or have been living with kidney disease for years, it raises questions – and it deserves a proper answer.

The kidneys do far more than make urine. They filter waste from the blood, balance fluids and minerals, help control blood pressure, and support healthy bones and blood. When they are not working as they should, it can affect the whole body, often gradually and without obvious signs.

Chronic kidney disease is common – worldwide, around one in ten adults is affected to some degree. While some kidney damage cannot be reversed, with the right diagnosis and care its progression can often be slowed and its complications managed, helping many people protect their kidney function and their quality of life.
