When seizures need a closer look
A sudden blank stare. A fall with no warning. Uncontrolled movements, or simply coming round with no memory of what just happened. A seizure can take hold without warning, and whether it happened to you or to someone you love, it is frightening — and it deserves a proper answer.
Epilepsy is more than the seizures other people can see. It is a medical condition in which the brain has a tendency to produce recurrent seizures, and it can affect awareness, movement, sensation, mood, and confidence in everyday life. A single seizure does not always mean epilepsy — and finding out what is really going on is the first step.
According to the World Health Organisation, around 50 million people worldwide are living with epilepsy, making it one of the most common neurological conditions. There is no single treatment that suits everyone, but with the right diagnosis and care, many people are able to gain good control of their seizures and get on with the things that matter to them.
At Thomson Medical, our neurology team provides specialist assessment and ongoing care for people with seizures and epilepsy — taking time to understand each person's situation, explain what is happening, and shape a treatment plan around their life.
