What is facial acupuncture?
Facial acupuncture is a natural beauty treatment rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It involves inserting tiny needles, as fine as a strand of hair, into acupuncture points on your face.
This traditional therapy rejuvenates your face while addressing underlying imbalances in the body, such as toxin build-up, heat conditions in the Lung and Stomach, and imbalances in Blood or Yin. By addressing these issues, facial acupuncture improves skin health and appearance, boosting your overall well-being and confidence.
At Thomson Medical, we combine acupuncture with Gua Sha to enhance its therapeutic impact on your skin and improve its overall vitality. We call this combination Facial AcuGlow.
The benefits of facial acupuncture
Facial acupuncture promotes long-term skin health by addressing the underlying causes of skin conditions, rather than just the visible symptoms. As a natural, non-invasive treatment, it provides an effective alternative with no recovery time.
Our Facial AcuGlow therapy takes this further, pairing acupuncture with Gua Sha for an even deeper therapeutic effect.

How do facial acupuncture & gua sha work?
Facial acupuncture works by creating tiny wounds, known as microtraumas. Although this may sound alarming, this micro-damage stimulates your body's natural healing process, boosting the production of collagen, elastin, and glycosaminoglycans (such as hyaluronic acid), which are key building blocks for plumper, firmer, and more hydrated skin.
The punctures also stimulate the lymphatic and circulatory systems, delivering essential nutrients and oxygen directly to your skin cells and nourishing your skin from the inside out for longer-lasting results.
We also place needles at acupuncture points on the body, not just the face, to support the internal systems that nourish your skin. This helps to regulate digestion and stress levels, ensuring that adequate nutrients and blood flow reach the face.
Our Facial AcuGlow treatment also incorporates Gua Sha, which stimulates the flow of Qi, Blood, and fluids by gently scraping the skin in controlled strokes. This promotes good skin health, softens wrinkles, relaxes the muscles and releases facial tension, giving you a softer overall appearance.
Unlike body Gua Sha, which can cause redness and bruising, facial Gua Sha is gentler. You won't experience the same level of redness, so there is no need to worry about your appearance afterwards.

What to expect during your session
Your Facial AcuGlow session begins with a detailed consultation, including tongue and pulse diagnosis and a facial skin analysis, to understand your skin and overall health.
During this 60-minute treatment, the physician performs acupuncture on the face and body, then leaves you to rest for 25 minutes to promote relaxation and energy balance. The session concludes with a soothing Gua Sha massage using essential oil to open up the neck and face.
Acupuncture works cumulatively, meaning each session builds on the last. For optimum results, we recommend 6 weekly sessions, followed by maintenance treatments every 2 to 4 weeks.
