What is a stroke?

A stroke, also known as a "brain attack", occurs when the flow of blood to the brain is disrupted, which starves brain cells of oxygen and nutrients. Without these vital supplies, the cells begin to deteriorate within minutes, leading to conditions such as paralysis on one side of the body, difficulty speaking, impaired cognition, and challenges with daily activities.

There are two types of stroke, ischaemic and haemorrhagic. The more common ischaemic stroke occurs when a blood vessel supplying the brain becomes blocked. A haemorrhagic stroke results from a ruptured blood vessel. In both cases, long-term harm can occur without intervention.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), stroke is known as Zhong Feng (中風), or "Wind Stroke". TCM attributes this to a disruption in the flow of Qi (vital energy) and Blood, which is rooted in Liver and Kidney deficiencies, as well as internal wind, phlegm, dampness, and blood stasis.

By addressing these imbalances, TCM aims to restore mobility, reduce pain, improve cerebral blood flow, and support speech recovery.

The root causes of stroke in TCM

In TCM, stroke develops from a combination of factors that disrupt the flow of Qi (vital energy) and Blood. Long-term emotional stress, excessive working hours, strenuous activity, and a poor diet can gradually weaken the Kidney and Spleen, creating deficiencies in Qi, Blood, and Yin.

This leaves the body vulnerable to pathogenic forces such as wind, dampness, and internal conditions such as Blood stasis.

How TCM treats stroke

TCM addresses stroke by targeting the imbalances in Qi and Blood flow that cause the condition.

While Western medicine focuses on acute intervention and prevention, TCM complements this approach by managing long-term recovery, reducing chronic complications, and enhancing your quality of life.

Stroke recovery with TCM

Although modern emergency medicine has improved outcomes, many patients still experience speech impediments, limb weakness, swallowing difficulties, and cognitive decline after leaving hospital. TCM can begin as soon as you are discharged to help restore function, enhance quality of life, and reduce the risk of a second stroke.

TCM treatment focuses on addressing symptoms in the acute stage and root causes in the chronic stage. Starting treatment early promotes the circulation of Qi and Blood, clears the meridians and improves cerebral blood supply.

For best results:

  • Begin treatment as early as possible after discharge
  • Attend a minimum of two sessions per week
  • Continue physiotherapy alongside TCM, if recommended by your care team

The first six months after a stroke are known as the “golden rehabilitation period”, when the nervous system is most capable of reorganising itself and the body's potential for recovery is at its peak. While treatment is still possible after six months, earlier intervention is always preferable.
