Common Gynaecological Health Conditions: Fibroids & Cysts

Why do women develop vaginal lumps or bumps?
Vaginal lumps or bumps can result from various causes including cysts, ingrown hairs, or swollen glands. While many are harmless and temporary, some may indicate infections, STIs like genital herpes or HPV, or other conditions requiring medical attention. Bartholin's cysts, sebaceous cysts, and vaginal varicose veins are common benign causes, though any new or persistent lumps should be evaluated by a healthcare provider for proper diagnosis.
Why do women have period pain or pain during/ after intercourse?
Period pain or pain during sex or lower abdominal pain in women often stems from endometriosis, grown fibroids, vaginal infections, or chronic pelvic pain syndrome. Grown cysts can cause pressure and discomfort, while untreated infections may lead to painful inflammation. Cervical abnormalities and hormonal changes from menopause can also contribute to intimate discomfort.
What are uterine fibroids?
Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the uterus, made up of muscle and fibrous tissue. Large fibroids can sometimes be felt as firm lumps or masses in the lower abdomen, causing a feeling of fullness or pressure. Fibroids are extremely common, affecting 60-80% of women at some point in their lives, though many remain unaware since they often cause no symptoms. Fibroids can affect fertility by blocking fallopian tubes, potentially leading to difficulty conceiving.
What are ovarian cysts?
Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that develop on or inside the ovaries, often as a normal part of the menstrual cycle. Larger cysts may be felt as soft, movable lumps in the pelvic area and can cause abdominal bloating or a sensation of fullness. About 46.7% of women in Singapore have adnexal cysts when examined by ultrasound and about 10 out of 100 women (10%) will have an ovarian cyst at some point in their lives.
Screen with a same-day pelvic ultrasound

Pelvic ultrasound is a quick, painless, and non-invasive imaging technique commonly used in most O&G clinics to examine your reproductive organs. This advanced diagnostic tool provides clear, detailed images that help detect grown fibroids, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, and early signs of uterine, ovarian, or cervical cancers. The procedure typically takes just 15-30 minutes and causes no discomfort, making it an ideal screening method for comprehensive women's health assessment.
