If your child struggles with dry, itchy skin that flares up from time to time, they may be dealing with eczema - one of the most common skin conditions in Singapore. Also known as atopic dermatitis, eczema can be frustrating for both parents and children, especially in our hot and humid climate, which tends to make flare-ups worse. The good news is that eczema can be managed and cared for with the right daily habits.
Here are some simple, effective tips to manage your child’s eczema in Singapore and help them feel more comfortable in their skin.
1. Keep Your Child's Skin Moisturised

Moisturising is one of the most important steps in eczema care. Apply a fragrance-free moisturiser or ointment at least twice a day, even when the skin looks clear. The best time to moisturise is right after a shower, to lock in moisture while the skin is still slightly damp.
Tip: Look for creams labelled for sensitive skin or eczema-friendly. Avoid products with alcohol, fragrance, or preservatives that can irritate the skin.
2. Take Short Baths and Use Gentle Cleansers

In Singapore’s warm weather, it is tempting to bathe your child often. However, long, hot showers can dry out the skin. Keep baths short, around 5–10 minutes and use lukewarm water with a mild, soap-free cleanser. Gently pat the skin dry with a soft towel instead of rubbing.
3. Dress Your Child in Breathable Fabrics

Sweat and heat are major eczema triggers in Singapore. Choose loose, cotton clothing that allows the skin to breathe. Avoid wool or synthetic materials that trap heat and cause irritation. When it’s hot, encourage your child to change into fresh clothes after sweating.

4. Manage the Indoor Environment

Many Singapore homes rely on air conditioning, which can dry the air and worsen eczema.
Try to:
• Maintain a comfortable room temperature
• Use a humidifier if the air feels too dry
• Wash bedsheets and soft toys regularly to reduce dust mites
Keeping your child’s environment clean and cool can make a big difference in preventing flare-ups.
5. Identify and Avoid Eczema Triggers

Every child’s skin is different. Common eczema triggers in Singapore include:
• Heat and sweat
• Dust mites
• Certain detergents or soaps
• Stress or lack of sleep
• Some foods (uncommon). Do not perform any food restriction unless guided by a physician.
• During an intercurrent illness (e.g. upper respiratory tract infection)
Keep a simple diary to track when flare-ups happen. It can help you and your doctor identify potential causes.
6. Prevent Scratching

Eczema can be extremely itchy, but scratching can lead to skin infections. Keep your child’s nails short and consider using cotton gloves or mittens, or sleeve bandages at night. Distract them with play, or apply cool compresses to soothe the itch. Your physician may recommend wet wrap therapy during a flare-up.
7. See a Doctor If Symptoms Persist

If your child’s eczema causes constant itching, oozing, or affects their sleep, it’s best to seek medical help. A doctor can prescribe medicated creams, antihistamines, or other treatments to control inflammation and restore the skin barrier.
