Dr Gowreeson Thevendran is a Consultant Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgeon currently practising at Island Orthopaedic in Thomson Road and Novena.
He has held several regional and international leadership roles, serving as the SICOT National Delegate for Singapore, Foot and Ankle Chairman for SICOT from 2018 to 2021, Scientific Programme Chairman for SICOT from 2019 to 2021, Education Academy Chair for SICOT from 2021 to 2024, and a Foot and Ankle Specialty Council Member of the Asia Pacific Orthopaedic Association. In research, he pioneered the use of Magnezix bioreabsorbable screws in Singapore and the Asia-Pacific region.
His subspecialty interests include foot and ankle surgery, trauma, and fracture surgery, as well as the treatment of lower extremity sports injuries. In his clinical practice, he treats foot and ankle conditions, ligament and cartilage injuries of the knee, and performs joint replacement surgery of the hip, knee and ankle. He is particularly skilled in minimally invasive foot and ankle surgery and also performs minimally invasive fracture surgery.
Dr Gowreeson studied medicine at the University of Bristol, England on a full scholarship by the Public Services Department. Basic surgical training was completed at the Royal Free Hospital, London, UK. He then underwent specialty training in orthopaedic surgery in the North West Thames. Thereafter, he completed subspecialty fellowship training at the University of British Columbia, Canada in foot and ankle surgery, at the Chelsea & Westminster Hospital London in sports surgery, and at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital in complex trauma and deformity correction surgery.
Prior to private practice, Dr Gowreeson was the former Chief of Foot & Ankle Surgery at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. During that period, he was also the associate programme director of the NHG Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Training Programme. At Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (Nanyang Technological University), he served as Assistant Professor and the Lead for Orthopaedic Curriculum. He continues to serve the orthopaedics department at Tan Tock Seng Hospital as a visiting consultant.
Teaching is a longstanding part of his work. He continues to participate as an international faculty member at the Royal College of Surgeons of England in the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons orthopaedics course, the Cambridge FRCS basic science course and the AO Foundation course. As part of his academic contributions, he is an external lecturer at the School of Biological Sciences at Nanyang Technological University and an examiner for the Master of Medicine (orthopaedics) exit exams at the National University of Singapore. He has also authored over 25 scientific articles in international peer-reviewed journals and was an invited speaker at more than 50 regional and international orthopaedic meetings.
Dr Gowreeson is accredited to perform surgical procedures at Thomson Medical Centre.
