Dr Shim Hang Hock is a Gastroenterologist currently practising at Acorn Gastroenterology, with clinics located in Farrer Park, Napier, Telok Kurau Road, and Orchard.
In 2016, Dr Shim was awarded the Healthcare Manpower Development Programme scholarship by the Ministry of Health, Singapore to undergo advanced fellowship training in Calgary, Canada. He has also received several service-related awards for his dedicated care and service excellence.
His clinical practice covers gastroenterology and general hepatology. He has a subspecialty interest in inflammatory bowel disease, including ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, as well as digestive cancer screening. He also performs capsule endoscopy, small bowel enteroscopy, and therapeutic endoscopy.
Dr Shim obtained his Bachelor of Medicine from the University of Southampton, United Kingdom, in 2007. He later completed his postgraduate medical qualifications in internal medicine, namely the Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP), and a Master of Medicine (MMed), before being subsequently accredited as a specialist in gastroenterology with the Specialist Accreditation Board, Singapore.
Prior to private practice, Dr Shim practised clinical gastroenterology and general hepatology at Singapore General Hospital, where he served as the Director of Inflammatory Bowel Disease Centre. He currently continues to be a Visiting Consultant at the same institution.
As an educator, he was formerly an Adjunct Assistant Professor with the SingHealth Duke-NUS Medicine Academic Clinical Programme, a Clinical Lecturer at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, and a clinical teacher at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He was also a Clinical Physician Faculty Member in the SingHealth Gastroenterology Senior Residency Program and a clinical teacher and Chief Clinical Exams Coordinator with the SingHealth Duke-NUS Medicine Academic Clinical Programme.
In addition, he has authored papers in medical journals including Alimentary Pharmacology Therapy, Journal of Crohn’s and Colitis, Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Open, Pharmacogenomics Journal, and Digestive and Liver Diseases. His recognitions include the SGH Service with a Heart Award in 2019, the SingHealth Health Manpower Development Plan Award for Financial Year 2015/2016, the Best Registrar Award in 2014 and 2015 at SGH, the Best House Officer Award in 2007 at SGH, and the Top Downloaded Research Paper 2018-2019 by Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Open. He is also a peer reviewer for medical journals.
