Keyhole hip surgery to treat a labral tear and hip impingement
A recent procedure showed us the importance of empowering patients with the right option of care, focusing on recovery through small keyhole (laprascopic) surgeries. Dr Benjamin Ang Fu Hong, Senior Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, performed the first hip arthroscopy at Thomson Medical Centre.
His patient had been living with hip pain for several years. An MRI scan confirmed a tear of the hip labrum, the ring of cartilage around the hip socket. The tear was associated with femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), a condition where extra bone causes the hip bones to pinch against each other during movement. His symptoms persisted despite physiotherapy and pain relief medication; he then chose to proceed with surgery.
Working through small keyhole incisions, Dr Ang repaired the torn labrum and reshaped the extra bone in a single procedure.
