Dr Edward Cheong is a Senior Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) Surgeon currently practising at PanAsia Surgery Clinic, with clinics located at Orchard Road, Thomson Road, Napier, Irrawaddy Road and Telok Kurau Road, as well as at Surgi-Ten Specialists in Farrer Park.
With over 30 years’ experience in upper gastrointestinal surgery, Dr Cheong specialises in minimally invasive and endoscopic management of upper GI conditions, particularly oesophageal and gastric cancer. His practice includes laparoscopic GI and general surgery, minimally invasive oesophagectomy, minimally invasive oesophago-gastric surgery, and endoscopic treatment for early upper GI cancers. He also applies Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) principles to support post-operative recovery, and has experience in managing anastomotic leaks.
He completed his higher specialist surgical training between 2002 and 2008 at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, and Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital in the United Kingdom. He subsequently undertook a one-year post-CCT senior surgical fellowship at the Heart, Lung, and Esophageal Surgery Institute, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, USA, where he received advanced training in minimally invasive oesophagectomy, minimally invasive oesophageal and gastric surgery, and endoscopic treatment of early oesophageal and gastric cancers.
Prior to entering private practice, Dr Cheong served from 2009 to 2022 as a Senior Consultant Upper GI and Laparoscopic Surgeon at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital in the UK, where he was also Upper GI Cancer Director. During his tenure, he introduced minimally invasive oesophagectomy, ERAS protocols, and endoscopic therapies for early cancers. He has also contributed to international surgical education as Co-Director and Trainer of minimally invasive gastrectomy and oesophagectomy courses at University Medical Centre Utrecht in the Netherlands.
Dr Cheong has received professional recognition for his clinical and academic contributions, including the Inaugural Dr James D. Luketich Chairman International Award in 2017 and a national award from the UK Care Quality Commission in 2018 in recognition of service improvements within the NHS. He remains actively involved in advancing minimally invasive upper GI surgery through teaching and training initiatives.
Dr Cheong is accredited to perform surgical procedures at Thomson Medical Centre.
