Dr Kang Yong Chiang is a Consultant Hand Surgeon and Specialist in Hand, Wrist, and Reconstructive Microsurgery currently practising at Orthopaedics International in Thomson Road, Orchard, Novena, and Napier.
As one of the few super-microsurgeons in Southeast Asia, Dr Kang specialises in trauma and complex limb reconstruction. He focuses on restoring function to limbs severely injured by trauma, burns, and infections. In addition, he has developed several surgical techniques and introduced advanced microsurgical flaps in Singapore for complex clinical scenarios, including free tissue transfer of bone, cartilage, functioning muscle, and super-thin flaps.
His clinical practice covers hand, wrist, and nerve surgery, minimally invasive hand surgery, paediatric hand trauma, microsurgical limb reconstruction, and burns and trauma-related reconstruction. He treats hand and wrist conditions in adults and children, including pain, numbness, injuries, degenerative issues, arthritis, stiffness, tumours, and deformity. In his practice, he uses non-invasive ultrasound for precise diagnosis and pre-surgical planning. He also performs keyhole endoscopy, wrist arthroscopy, ligament repairs, fracture fixation, peripheral nerve surgery, joint replacement for hand arthritis, and reconstruction of hand function.
Dr Kang obtained his MBBS from the National University of Singapore in 2005. In 2009, he received MRCS (Edinburgh) after completing all four parts of the accreditation examination in one year. Specialist training in Hand Surgery was completed through the National Healthcare Group residency in 2011, where he was a pioneer trainee in the new programme dedicated to the specialty. His further training includes a Clinical Fellowship in Reconstructive Microsurgery at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital (Taiwan) in 2021, an Executive Certificate from Duke-NUS in 2023, and a Master’s degree in Reconstructive Microsurgery from Chang Gung University in 2025.
Before entering private practice, Dr Kang was Senior Consultant at Singapore General Hospital. During this period, he served as Associate Program Director for Hand Surgery specialist trainees, Chairman of the Residency Program Evaluation Committee for Hand Surgery, and Fellowship Director for international specialists. He also held teaching appointments as Clinical Assistant Professor and Examiner at Duke-NUS Medical School, Clinical Assistant Professor at NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, and Adjunct Assistant Professor at NTU Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine. Today, he continues to contribute as a Visiting Consultant to Singapore General Hospital and KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital.
His contributions have been recognised with the Ministry of Health HMDP Award for a microsurgical reconstruction fellowship. Dr Kang has also received the Service with a Heart Award three times, the Hero Award for COVID-19, the Scientific Award Bronze Certificate of Excellence from JPRAS Open International Journal, and the Best Scientific Paper Award from NHG Residency.
