Dr Lee Shu Yen is a Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist and Vitreoretinal Surgeon currently practising at Advanced Eye Clinic and Surgery in Orchard.
With 24 years of experience as an ophthalmologist in Singapore, Dr Lee manages common retinal conditions such as retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, and macular disorders. She also performs cataract surgery and manages complex cataract issues, including post-cataract surgery complications. In addition, she offers intraocular lens correction options to help patients achieve their desired visual outcomes. Her clinical work includes retinal procedures such as scleral buckling and vitrectomy, as well as treatment for high myopia-related complications. She also provides established treatments for diabetic retinopathy, including anti-VEGF injections, laser therapy, and diabetic vitrectomy.
Dr Lee graduated from the National University of Singapore and completed her training in ophthalmology at the Singapore National Eye Centre. She then underwent fellowship training in Surgical and Medical retina at SNEC as well as at the Lions Eye Institute, Perth, Western Australia.
Prior to private practice, Dr Lee served at the Singapore National Eye Centre, where she completed her ophthalmology training and later became Head of the Surgical Retina department, leading the team that provided the majority of surgical retina coverage in Singapore. She also chaired the SNEC Research and Innovation Committee and the Grants Committee. In addition, she served on the executive committee of the College of Ophthalmologists, Academy of Medicine Singapore, as Secretary and later Vice-President.
In 2013, she was elected as the first lady ophthalmologist President of the Singapore Society of Ophthalmologists and held the position for almost 10 years. During this period, she enabled the set up of the Young Ophthalmologists section, served as a council member of the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) and the ASEAN Ophthalmology Society (AOS), organised the APAO in Singapore in 2017, and was appointed to the MOH committee Diabetes Taskforce.
In addition to her clinical work, Dr Lee has 17 years as a clinical Associate Professor in DUKE-NUS. Her interest in training future ophthalmologists led her to serve as a core faculty member for the SNEC Residency Program and to teach local as well as international fellows in the Surgical Retina program. She has been frequently invited to speak at local, regional, and international ophthalmology and retinal conferences on retinal disease management, imaging, and surgical techniques.
Dr Lee is accredited to perform surgical procedures at Thomson Medical Centre.
