Dr Tan Bo Chuan is a General and Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) surgeon currently practising at Clinic for Digestive Surgery on Novena and Thomson Road.

Dr Tan’s clinical interest is in minimally invasive gastrointestinal surgery, encompassing both oncological and metabolic spectrums, in addition to the use of endoscopy in the evaluation of gastrointestinal disorders.

Dr Tan began his medical career with the Ministry of Health Holdings (MOHH) after graduating from the National University of Malaysia (UKM) in 2009. He entered the General Surgery Residency Programme in 2011 and underwent training at several tertiary hospitals in Singapore, including National University Hospital, Tan Tock Seng Hospital, and Khoo Teck Puat Hospital. During this period, he completed his Master of Medicine (Surgery) from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2016. After completing his residency training in 2017, he was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and received specialist accreditation from the Specialist Accreditation Board (SAB) of Singapore. In 2019, he was awarded the Ministry of Health’s Health Manpower Development Plan (HDMP) scholarship to undertake an Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery Fellowship at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital in South Korea.

After completing his residency, Dr Tan served as a Consultant General and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH). During his tenure, he held leadership roles including Head of the Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgery Unit and Clinical Director of the Integrated Care for Obesity and Diabetes (ICOD) Centre. His work in the ICOD programme was recognised by the National Healthcare Group (NHG) with a Gold Award, highlighting a multidisciplinary approach involving surgeons, endocrinologists, nurses, and allied health professionals in the management of patients with weight-related and metabolic conditions.

Dr Tan is actively involved in professional education and academic activities. He serves as a Senior Clinical Lecturer at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, and as a Clinical Block Leader (Surgery) at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University. He is also a core faculty member of the National Healthcare Group’s General Surgery Residency Programme.

In addition, he has served as secretary of both the Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society of Singapore (OMSSS) and the Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition of Singapore (SingSPEN). He has also contributed to surgical conferences, workshops, and research projects, including work related to bariatric surgery outcomes and metabolic disease.
