Dr Tan Ek Khoon is a Senior Consultant Surgeon specialising in hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) and transplant surgery. He practices at Digestive and Liver Surgery in Napier, Orchard, Thomson Rd., and Farrer Park, Singapore.
Dr Tan graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS) and completed his General Surgery training at Singapore General Hospital (SGH). He holds a Master of Medicine (Surgery) from NUS and a Master of Public Health from the Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University, USA.
During his training, he was awarded the National Medical Research Council Overseas Research Training Fellowship to study the effects of ischaemia-reperfusion injury on hepatic oval cells at the Ochsner Clinic, USA. After completing his specialist training, he pursued further subspecialty training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, USA, where he completed an American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS) accredited two-year fellowship programme in abdominal organ transplantation.
Dr Tan's clinical practice covers general surgical conditions as well as subspecialty issues related to the liver, pancreas, gallbladder, and biliary tract (hepatopancreatobiliary). He has a special interest in transplant oncology and the surgical treatment of advanced cancers, often involving complex resection and reconstructive techniques.
He is skilled in minimally invasive (laparoscopic and robotic) surgical approaches and is a nationally gazetted liver transplant surgeon. Notably, he is the only ASTS Transplant Accreditation & Certification Council Certified Abdominal Transplant Surgeon in Singapore.
Before transitioning to private practice, Dr Tan served as a Senior Consultant Surgeon in the Department of Hepatopancreatobiliary and Transplant Surgery at SGH. He held national and institutional appointments related to transplantation and research, including Chairperson of the National Organ Transplant Unit (Liver Subcommittee) and Director of Research at the SingHealth Duke-NUS Transplant Centre.
Additionally, he has contributed to medical education as a Clinical Assisant Professor at both Duke-NUS Medical School and the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.
Dr Tan has been recognised for his contributions to medicine with multiple accolades, including the Singapore Health Quality Service Award (Star) in 2023 and the Service with a Heart Award in 2020. He was also honoured with the Young Investigator Award by the Asia-Pacific Hepatopancreatobiliary Association in 2019.
